Oil filter question plus engine noise

Take a look at the pictures... My first question is about the oil filter change. The Bosch kit came with 5 rubber o-rings but I only found 4 0-rings that I could change on the C320. I am assuming the Bosch includes 1 extra perhaps for other engines? The extra one has a green line next to it and the ones that I actually replaced have red lines next to them. Just wanted to confirm that i did the job right. (Also, is this Bosch filter suitable for long intervals between oil changes? Like 10K? It says long life, but I am not sure what that means).

Second question is about a ticking noise that I get from the engine and whether that's normal on a 2003 C320. Picture #2 shows the part that is producing a ticking noise when the engine is running... repetitive "tick, tick, tick..." The noise starts a few minutes after starting the car. It is definitely noticable with the hood open. It is coming from the part circled in red and if you put your hand on it you can feel it pulsing every time it "ticks". Is it a problem or "normal vehicle operation" in these cars?

I have the same ticking problem. Havent really checked where in the engine it's coming from but it's so annoying...so I too am wondering what the problem might be

At least in my case it is definitely from that part that is circled in red. Maybe you want to check it out to see if we got the same thing going on? You should be able to feel it pulsing if you put your hand on it while it is ticking. I am sure someone will at least know what this part is anyway and what the problem might be.

That is the EECS purge valve - frequently clicks loudly. Replace & mount on rubber. You will see this pic all over the forum of someones filthy engine.

Thanks Glyn. So besides the noise - is there really no reason to change it since there are no codes and no performance issues? The ticking is not that bad with the hood closed, I just noticed it because I was running the car with the hood open while checking the oil level etc. I don't mind replacing it if this ticking was a sign of impending failure, but I'd rather not touch it if it is considered "normal".

Also, can someone confirm that my filter assembly was OK based on the picture? This is my first oil change on the Benz so I want to make sure I got it right.

Your filter is fine. No impending failure of the purge valve - just noisy. Mine is silent but I,m waiting for the dreaded tick at which time I will replace it. It would drive me nuts.

Cool, I will leave it alone then. It's really not that noticeable with the hood closed.
