CPS is very likely but I wouldnt rule out the fuel pump. My car acted almost identical to yours. It would start up fine after the car sat for a little while, but would constantly die after driving for a bit. It then would not start up again until it sat for a while and then get on the gas and it would stall. My assumption is that when the pump cooled down it would supply fuel but would later on heat up and stop working. I changed my pump and everything works fine now.

scan the engine ecu for fault codes, when the car starts how does it perform, does it still have power and rev up? most likely cause would be MAF sensor

Okay, here's how it starts up.

Crank it, it doesn't catch on until 3-4 seconds later, then it fires up. With the MAF plugged in, it will continue to idle till it just dies out. Sometimes it would "catch" itself, and jump the revs. With the MAF off, it will idle till I step on the gas.

Each time, stepping on the gas will kill the car.

Either you have a air leak between MAF and throttle body!
there is breather hose that connects to the intake pipe near the throttle body make sure its on and not cracked. if thats Try another MAF.
Those 112 engines dont really like to run without a MAF signal.

if the rev jumps. then yea, it should be the throttle body. either the pedal sensor or the one that's built in on the throttle.

How is it an air leak? I'm not questioning you, lol, just wondering. And I can get to the MAF, but I don't remember seeing hoses around there.

So throttle body sensor? Or pedal sensor? It revs up sometimes, but most of the time it dies out..

i mean an airtight seal between your airmass and throttle body. Are you able to plug a diagnostic tool into your car and read fault codes? because that would really narrow it down.

The 112 engine goes onto a default map if you unplug the MAF.

Hi,

I'm new here but i would like to help.I will agree with some of the other guys by saying you need to scan it and pull any codes or pending codes,as this will help narrow your problem area.Other than that i wouldnt rule out any possible causes.I'm not saying its a maf problem but unplugging it and the car will run/idle is a direction to look into, also i have seen k&n fill maf's although i do have them in my 07 sport w/272 with no problems they can come over oiled so cleaning might help and is a cheap route to take first.

I have also seen clogged fuel filters cause cars to stall after a bit of running and driving and when the car stalls and sits for a while the dirt will settle and allow the car to start and run again for a while. So dont entirely rule that out either yet.

But you need to scan the car first,i had my infiniti have an intermittent starting issue which i thought was a fuel pump problem, with no cel the next time it happened i scanned it turns out immobilizer went bad.So believe me issue arent always what they seem the benz being a smart car it should point you in the direction to look.

How long does the car run with the maf unplugged,a little while and idle sorta fine? But it does sound like the maf direction to me.

Not yet. I've been looking for it, and now I may just buy it.

I was trying to borrow a scanner, but my friend Temjinx doesn't know where it is. I might just buy the scanner itself and see. With the MAF unplugged, it idled perfectly fine, didn't stall out after 8-10 minutes until I stepped on the gas.

Mu $50 at Harbor Freight. This is the cheapest unit that tells you what the codes mean. It also behaves itself with Benz. Many on this board have this model. I use an Equus Innova 3130 but this baby is fine to keep in the glove box.

I picked this up for $30 on sale one week and keep it in my glove box. I don't know why so many people cry about not having a reader when this thing is cheap, reliable, and handy to keep around.

Thanks for the headsup, I'm planning on picking up this weekend!

Sorry if I'm one of those people, but I rarely see the use for one of these except for certain circumstances. Usually can get it diagnosed through symptoms and forum threads, so this is probably the first time I really needed the unit for use. And also, I'm a college student that only has one car, and if that car breaks down I'm immobile, and trying to get rides when everyone is busy, to me, is very annoying. But thanks tho!

Update

From messing around with it a bit more, I found out that the gas pedal is a bit picky. From messing around, I concluded that it stalls out when I push the pedal to the ground. If I only push it down 1-2cm of travel, it goes with no problem. It's when I step on it a bit more that it starts hesitating. So maybe it has to do something with the throttle/gas pedal too?

Tommy sounds like the throttle body is malfunctioning. Same thing was happening to my Tc (car acted same way as you discribed) took it to the dealer they swaped it worked fine after. only difference is the Tc has a sensor in the TB I dont know about our cars (looking at the pics I've seen online looks like it might). That can be your problem.

Clear Cut, this seems like a fuel pump issue to me.

I just did two different fuel pumps this year. Too bad you don't still have the Brabus shift knob, I'd come over and swap in a pump to see if that cured your issues. Whatever you do, don't go with a used pump. More issues than the savings are worth. Ask me how I have done two pumps on the same car.

I also have the Innovo Scan Reader, but if it is a fuel pump issue, you won't get any codes.

Hmm, you do still have the AMG brakes? I have my stock Coupe brakes and rotors. Perhaps we could work something out.

Here's the thing we could all sit here and shout out what we think is wrong, but in all actualality is that you could buy that scanner which is very helpful at times for ppl. But the thing it wont do is lets say you TB is bad your gonna need a better one that can see live data and verify pedal depress percent/voltage to actual TB percent.Hence need to get it scanned.

One thing i will say you could try is,now im not 100% sure on this but if the ignition is on and you press the pedal the TB should react you should just be able to have a buddy look at the TB and see how far it opens depending on how far you press the pedal down.Correct me if im wrong this is a guess and a possible method you could try yourself but still doesnt give you any factual data on whats wrong with your car.

If this were indeed a maf problem some cars will stay running and still rev a little if you press the pedal a little bit before it would dye, full throttle most certainly will stall.

Phil,

a fuel pump problem won't throw any codes. A TB issue would create rough running, perhaps a stall if stuck, but in a few years on this board, I don't read about many TB issues.

Thanks bro. Where would I find a used pump at? I'm honestly looking for the short term, as I'm getting rid of the car as soon as it's able to move. So has the same symptoms happened to you?

And great! I need brakes. Do you know if there's a difference between the C320 and C230 brakes? Maybe in terms of sizes and stuff? But I'd be more than happy to take the calipers and rotors off your hands. I need to put my 16'' stockies back on, but it ain't happening with the C32's.

I'm trying, but there's no CEL and if there was, it would be for when I d/c the MAF. But I'm going to get it done soon enough. thanks for the input.

Check fuel pressure at rail point. Autozone will loan you a pressure tester.

The TB actuator can start fluttering/oscillating at high mileage causing rough running & stalling. It will not throw a code generally. Replacement is the only fix.

Mu - you are going to have to go through these things one by one & eliminate them. Check for codes as a guide. e.g. if you have a vacuum leak you will store a fuel trim code. Jumping around is never going to get you anywhere and reading codes will at least eliminate certain possibilities.

Good luck!

Will do Glynn! I'm going to get the code reader sometime this weekend.

On a side note, I'll miss all you guys when I do get a different car. I've always loved this forum, and it's because of people like yall that makes me want to come back.

I'll be here, but I won't be as active like I was when I first got my car, lol. I'm planning to go JDM, or if I do stick with Euro, an e46 M3. Those things are very affordable nowadays lol
