Question Rumbling sensation when slowing down. Also very slight steering vibration on breaking

Rather then start 2 threads I thought I'd start one. But two separate questions.

Rumbling sensation when slowing down

Yesterday I was driving in a bit of a storm. So I had everything going on full (fog lights, de-mister, heater, wipers, radio etc). So obviously the car was using a lot more electrics than usual.

What I did notice was that when I was pulling to a stop, just before the stop, the car would jitter/rumble a little before full stop. Almost like when a car is about to stall (although it didn't feel close to stalling, its just the best way I can describe it).

Anyone else ever noticed this?

Also very slight steering vibration on breaking

I have begun to notice that when I break, there is an ever so slight wobble in on the steering wheel. Its not much, its very light. If I'm on the highway and need to slow down, I sometimes can see it wobble if I let go of the wheel.

I also sometimes see a wobble when curzing, bit its only sometimes so I think that is the road.

My car has done this from time to time since 25000 miles and is at 115000 now. It has never actually stalled, and it only does occasionally. I've learned not to worry with it.

I have the same problem. I'm still trying to figure out what is causing it.

Do you notice it when your A/C is on , it vibrates a lot more when you brake and get to that stop sign? Mine does.

I'm guessing the eletronic idle control. Ever since my belt tensioner pulley went out. I changed it. It has been having this problem. I changed just about everything on my car so far. Spark Plugs, Serpentine Belt, IDLE pulley, Belt Tensioner Pully, Powersteering pump, recharged A/C.

It has reduce the vibrations greatly. I hardly notice it. It just does it once inawhile now.

The only thing I haven't done is a transmission flush.

Have you went to your local autozone and see if it gives you a error code on the OBD?

I have an error code: p2119 - calling MB dealer tomorrow about it.

steering vibration... i noticed on my dads lexus ls400, when i hit the brakes i would get a vibration. turned out it was the brake rotor that was warped. might wanna check that out just to rule the option out.

No, I'm not at the stage where its bad enough to have a look at it. But next service (about 5000km away) I will ask them to have a look.

That is what I am leaning towards. Had new brakes put in by dealer just over 3 months ago. But knowing dealers, it would have been the most cost effective breaks. If it gets worse, I might ask if the breaks can be machined.

You might have a slight combination of things - wheel balance & brakes. Did you break in your new pads? See Stoptech website for procedure.

No I don't (never been told I needed to). I'll google this Stoptech website now.

Uneven pad material deposition on the rotor can cause shimmy under braking.

If it gets worse, its ever soooo light at the moment, I will get it machined. Next service I will get them machined anyways. I bet they used whatever the most cost effective pads are anyways because the dealer paid for them.

On the subject of breaks; the car does break very very well. Got me out of a fender-bender about a month ago when the car in front hit the breaks all of a sudden. My Holden would have been at the panel beaters now.

Just run through the Stoptech procedure & see if it improves. Machining new rotors is a shame. Reduces their life drastically.

I just read it. Very good info. I'll give it q try.

But what improvement can I expect after having the breaks for 3 months?

It will scuff off existing pad material on the discs & lay down a new even layer.

Thanks a lot again Glyn. A wealth on knowledge you have there

I'll do what the site says. But its been raining down crazy and the roads are wet. I'll wait until the weather is better and we got dry roads again before I perform the procedure this site instructs; http://www.stoptech.com/tech_info/wp_bedinstock.shtml

Hello anonymousemoose,
did you get the p2119 code figured out?
