It may be interesting to note that it hasn't been as sunny & hot any-more in West Aussie than it was when I started this thread. The last week was overcast and and a bit of rain. The wipers were not 'playing up'.
Could there be a connection to the blaring West Australian sun and the wipers going off? Here in Australia we do get 35 degrees-celsius on standard summer days. At the time I posted, its was about 30 degrees that week with no cloud cover at all.

As I stared earlier, it's not a big concern yet worth posting anyways. But just to play devils advocate; I do see your point and will just turn em off if they start activating when there is no rain, but saying the system is not meant to be 'left on all the time' seems contradictory to its design. Happy to be corrected if I wrong.
If your complaining about the wipers going off randomly when set to "auto" or the sensor then you need to be smarter then the car, the system isnt supposed to be left on all the time. If you complained about that at an MB dealer they would tell you to turn your wipers off when its not raining, and put it on auto when it was.

This is directly from my 2007 Operator's manual. It talks about damage to the windshield if the wipers activate on a dirty and dry windshield. The manual then states, "You should therefore switch off the windshield wipers when weather conditions are dry." I have always used the sensor position only when it is raining and left the wipers off when it is not raining. That is obviously the MB position on this subject.

Yes - I suspect certain conditions even when operating perfectly could trigger a spurious wipe.

Glyn, The one thing that has happened to me many times that would trigger an unwanted wipe on a dry day is this; the driver of the car on the highway ahead of you decides to wash their windshield. All of a sudden and before you can get out of the way your car is covered with a heavy mist of cleaning fluid blowing back from the car ahead of you. Left alone it will just dry without much effect on anything but if the wipers activate it will streak up a real mess. Anonymousmoose, don't try to read it in one sitting, it will bore you to death. But, there is a lot of good information there so bit by bit it is worth going through.
