Where's my oil leak coming from?

Hello,

I had the Cam solenoid campaign done in 2010 (campaign 2009100001).

But when I looked at the Cam area today, I noticed oil/dirt! Any ideas on where this oil is coming from? I thought I wont have such a leak if I had this campaign performed.

Thanks for any input!

the "campaign" just protects and minimizes the possibility of getting leaks it does not eliminate them. in any way get 2 brand new magnets and oil catcher wires they wont surpass the total of 100 euros

are you sure its a leak and not from before the recall was done and they never cleaned the block? Is it fresh?

You would be best served to just get the cam magnet which is the boob looking thing in your pic, don't really see any reason to repl the other parts light said to, doesn't look like you need em. Ill ask a Mb mech when I get into work his official opinion on it and see what he says.

Its common for them to leak so don't worry

Hmmm, I'm not 100% sure if the dirt/oil was there before the campaign was done, so I guess it's possible like you said it's old and was just never cleaned out. That's a great point. COme to think of it I dont' see any fresh oil, what's there is all covered wit dirt. Maybe I should jsut clean it off myself and watch carefully for recurrence?

try pulling the cam sensors and stick your finger in the cam magnet

if no oil then no worry

Looks like old dirty and oil to me. Just spray it down with degreaser and wash it off and check at the end of the week to see if its leaking. But it looks like old oil that stained the engine to me.

+1

I would be amazed if those spots were left from before the campaign repair. If they were, I would never go to that stealer again. That's something not even the most amateur wrench would do.

I never troubled asking if it was there before the magnet's upgrade because upgrading the magnets - LOGICALLY - he would have noticed if it was there and cleaned it!!

We don't disagree.

Adidas wondered if the oil spots were still there from before the campaign fix. As I said, that would be HIGHLY unlikely, but if it were, it would be because of the stealer's incompetence.

Thanks for the input everyone. I ended up taking the car to the local dealer, who replaced the cam solenoids and seals. And they cleaned up the old oil stains.

So far no more signs of leaking oil. And yes, I was charged for the repair.
