Another Mercedes noob

Hey guys,

As title, another new Mercedes Benz owner here, my first and very likely not my last. Lurked a few times but thought i'd sign up, mainly for your expert information i admit but also to join in now and then . Decided to downsize (engine wise) and get something a little more economical, and another auto. Fuel is a little pricey in Scotland these days! Car was bought from a family friend and is a 02 C180 Kompressor Elegance SE with 58k on the clocks. Not up to you guys' standards but i'm very pleased with it. Hope to do a few things here & there over time, Wheels, suspension etc. You know, as you do

Anyway, hope i'm welcome and look forward to joining in when i can.

Ross

Orion Blue is always welcome.

As Steel said, very clean car. Your family friend should be complimented.

Yes, it's only Orion in US/Canada (as far as I know).

In German, it's Japis blau.

Who knows why it's different in two English-speaking areas. Mercedes does some weird things.

UK, rest of Europe all got C180's too. I believe, and i could very easily be wrong but arent your C200 & C230 W203's all 1.8 liters too but with different bhp outputs?

Edit, Wikipedia says i am right, and wrong. Lots to learn lol.

In the US, there are no C200. I have a C230 with the following specs:
Base engine size: 2.5 L
Cam type: Double overhead cam (DOHC)
Cylinders: V6
Valves: 24
Torque: 181 ft-lbs. @ 2700 rpm
Horsepower: 201 hp @ 6200 rpm

the 2006 and 2007 models has the v6 engines. They dropped the I4 w/ kompressor since 2005. I think the I4 w/ kompressor is a 1.8L.

I heard the C250 is an I4 w/ turbo, but that is the new body style. Looking back, I like our classic styles and if not, it should be put in the books as classics. Looks like it got a face lift on the headlights or at least that the first thing i notice. Wonder what engine is on this thing.

Ahh i see, Mercedes are almost as bad as BMW for changing model numbers & engine sizes like they used to do! I know there are C200 and C230's with the 1.8 litre Kompressor engine as i have a couple of brochures and was speaking to the parts guy at my local Mercedes dealership about them. Only one brochure being for US models. These are for the early W203's however, not the facelifted models. Yeah we got all the V6's over here too, like the idea of a C320 but not right now. Fuel costs are a nightmare. Yes i think the newer C250 over here is a 4 pot too. Mine isn't what i would have chosen ideally, but it seems a good one

You guys seem to know your stuff anyway, learning already.

Yeah, the 2012 has some changes. I didn't like the 2008 - 2011 style, at least they are making some improvements to make more attractive, at least for me. Over here in the states, the 2005 - 2007 models has the facelifts inside and outside, except for the 2005 model where the engine is in between the facelift changes. As for looks, the facelift has made it last complete morf into that classic beauty. Don't know if you seen one, you would fall in love as many did.

Just wondering, would the C250 where it's I4 w/turbo saves gas vs the V6 engine (of course it won't be compare to the new c350 enginee, but more like the 06 c230 v6) ? Glyn, any comments?

Haven't seen what, a facelift W203? Or pre-facelift & facelift W204? There are allot of Mercs over here in Europe

I actually really really like the first of the W204's, as in 2007+... Look lovely to me and certainly an instant classic like the 190E was over here. Not too sure on the new model as yet.

W203, there is a pre-facelift and facelift on these models. The pre-facelift is hideous and dull. I know, I owned one before (nothing personal for those who still has this version).

Oh.. in that case, different people different perspective. I didn't like it, it reminds me of a honda accord. Sorry to say.

As for the new 2012 model, its morphing and is starting to look better. Funny thing, I got a letter from the dealership asking me that they want to buyback my car the other day. I was like, I just got this and you want me to sell it already.

Yeah thanks, mine's a prefacelift lol. No, i prefer the facelift myself but simply couldn't afford one... few upgrades on this one and i'll be happy. Really is a very relaxing car to drive and calming too i find. I've had various cars, mainly Japanese, MR2 (still have it) Lexus GS300 Sport, Honda Accord Type R etc. I have wide tastes but growing up a bit, enjoying the Mercedes experience

Been there, done that. haha Welcome to the doors of being OLD, I mean wise.
Actually, when I had the prefacelift, I had consider doing some mods. Although that would be a good idea to do, but after a few discussion here and there, the point of the money spent to make it look like a facelift would be better put into selling the prefacelift and just buy the facelift car itself.

Haha yeah, that's true... but to be honest i'm really not that bothered, i don't strive to have newer vehicles all the time, the age of a car doesn't bother me it's condition that matters. Especially in UK as Mercedes rust like hell in our climates. To get what i would like ideally would cost me double what i payed so it's all good

The M271 EVO Turbo engine can run stoichiometric & leaner. It is an ultra lean burn engine. Benz may be running it too lean - lots of flat spot complaints on top of turbo lag. The European ECU tuners are having a field day.

I have driven it in the new C Coupe & SLK in SA form with the ultra lean burn turned off. Performance is more perky than the specs would suggest.

Needs to be driven with some appreciation of the fact that it is a turbo. i.e. let the turbo spool up. Don't just mash the throttle & leave the ECU battling to control mixture. Progressive throttle application achieves better results.

I think its certainly up to standard. I like non modified cars... If your upgrading the wheels, may I suggest something like these...

I think it keeps a very elegant look, not over sporty, which your car is.

The ones with the factory sports kits like mine have more agressive wheels... which in your case, I personally wouldn't go for.

Whichever way you go, even if mod everything... its a great car and its about your enjoyment!

Welcome and nice car!

Nice car wunderless

Thanks for your comments anonymousmoose, i haven't decided what wheels & it won't be for a while yet, but i do actually like some from the newer models. The previous owner of mine has a C220cdi Estate now with the same wheels as that gold 4 door and they look great. Might go the elegant look (pardon the pun) or maybe Adharaz from the Sports. C32 wheels even, but don't want to make it like a replica.
