2005 C180 Kompressor Passenger Seat Belt Detector Issue

My 2005 C180K model is six years old.

For the past THREE years its had this issue!

Whenever the car heats up, i.e. when its hot outside and the car heats up on the inside, the car's passenger seat sensor, which is linked to the airbag system, shows that there is a passenger sitting there, and that the seatbelt needs to be fastened!

If you fasten the passenger seatbelt everything becomes fine, not sure about the airbag functionality apparently though.

If you smack the passenger seat really hard, the sensor sometimes goes away and doesnt think there's a passenger there. When its cold outside, or if driving at night, the sensor never shows there is a passenger there.

Obviously I went to Mercedes Service Centre and guess what, $2000 to get the sensor replaced, which is a joke. They also mentioned the airbag may not work properly and its worth getting this replaced even for that price.

I went to another repair guy, he said the sensor needs replacing just like Mercedes said, but it costs $1300.

I'm in Sydney, Australia.

Are there any feasible options to solve this problem?

I'm pretty sure I picked up my sensor new from Mercedes for around $280 CDN. Not sure what else they're replacing that will add up to $2000, or even $1300. Do you have a work order you can show us?

What they're saying is its going to be a $186 per hour investigative job to see where the problem is, and a potential $2000 to remove the seat, replace the entire sensor which is linked to airbags and computers, and change the upholstery where the issue lies.

There are 4 bolts holding the seat down. Then undo the clips for the wiring underneath and the whole seat will come out. Take your time with removing the upholstery to get to the occupancy sensor and replace. Part number 203 821 62 51 for my Coupe but I assume it should be the same for Sedan.

I'd be really worried replacing the sensor by myself, as it is linked to the airbag and I was told it can cause the whole computer system to fail, however I would be willing to pay $186 for the 1 hour of service for Mercedes to replace it and $280ish for the sensor itself. I cant find the part with that number though in Aust, any ideas where to look? thanks so much

PM Ausmbtech for advice on cheapest route your end. He is based in Sydney. Working on Benz cars in Aus is an expensive exercise mainly driven by labour rates. Dealers also fleece you guys for parts so you might want to order from elsewhere.

Ausmbtech is a member on here & very helpful. He can advise on the best fix for Australia.

It might pay you to order the parts from the US but speak to him first.
