Brake Caliper Paint

Thought I would pass this on to anyone interested.
I put on a set of C32 split spoke wheels and the dirty brake calipers didn't look to cool.
I inexpensive fix was Rust-Oleum Hammered paint. The paint comes in silver, red, black and I think yellow. This worked great. I cleaned the calipers off and painted on the siler paint, 2 coats. This paint can go right over rust if there is any. The more coats you put on the more protection.
A quart is 9.95 and is thin enough that it can be sprayed on. I used a cheat throw a way brush, this was easier since I painted the calipers on the car.
The paint has a shine and dries smooth, brush marks blend and the finished product looks great.
Brake dust does not stick to the calipers, when I wash the car I wipe the calipers when I clean my wheels and they look like the day they were painted.

For my purposes this worked great, very inexpensive compared to power coating and special caliper paint.

I wish I had a digital camera to show the results. If they was compared to the calipers I saw on the site that was powered coated red you would have a hard time telling the difference.

How long has it been since you painted them? I would be curious to know if the paint would hold up to the heat and the expansion/contraction due to the high temps. I've had even Rust-Oleum high-temp paint flake like crazy from a grill.

I painted the calipers about 3 weeks ago. My wife drives the car everyday to work, rain or shine. So far the paint is holding up.

This paint is different than the hi-temp paint. I have used hi-temp paint (various brands) and have never found one that stood up against the heat.

I was at the MB dealer today and compared my calipers to the paint on the AMG. The only difference between the paint I used is the silver is a little darker than the silver on the AMG. Other than that I could see no difference. I brushed the paint on, when it dried it looked like it was sprayed on.
The brake dust washes off, I seem to have more dust on my wheels than on the calipers.
The directions states that you can put on additional cost after the first 30 minutes up to 4 hours. After that you have to wait 7 days to put on more coats. I don't understand the 7 day stuff.
I know caliper paint is about $50. I haven't seen the finished product so I can't compare the color of the caliper paint to this.

I found another person that used this paint. He sprayed the under carriage of his truck, everything, fenders, driveshaft, etc. He uses the truck for work and so far it it still looks good. He hoses off the underneath of the truck when he washes it. he has had the paint on for about 3 to 4 months.

Lowes $9.95. They also sell it in a spray can. The qt. is the better deal.

Anyone else ever try this with their calipers? I'm going to be painting my calipers soon and I was just going to get the spray caliper paint from a pepboys or autozone, but this seems like a pretty good alternative. Or am I wrong? lol.

I have painted many a caliper and always use the high temp paint from autozone. I have never had a problem with chipping or anything. I typically did 6-7 coats with color, and 3-4 coats with hight temp clear coat. You can even do the vinyl decal between the color and clear. I have never had one of those come off before either and have done 7-8 cars like that....

What do you think about Plasti-Kote? I am painting my calipers soon too and was wondering if anyone had experience with Plasti-Kote caliper spray.

My caliper is kinda dirty. What do you recommend to clean it with or do to it before painting?

One more question guys. I want to add the clear coat spray to the caliper but where can I buy this stuff and what brand should I get? I was at autozone yesterday and I asked one of the guys for clear coat spray and he just took me to some shine used for rims.

I would think you can't really go wrong in color matching the calipers to your body color. It's a nice, noticeable touch without being over the top. I think silver calipers on a black car would look nice (although they might blend into the wheels and rotors), or vice versa. White with black decals would look nice, too (although it might be a big pain in the *** to keep the dust off of).

IMO red or yellow should generally be reserved to extremely powerful, super-high-end cars (i.e. 911's, most Ferraris, etc.). When I see those colors I think massive racing brakes, drilled/slotted rotors, etc. By going red or yellow you're saying that your car is so badass that even your brakes need to be noticed. Most W203's (with the exception of a Kleemann or Brabus C55) don't fall into that category if you ask me.

I painted mine red...a stock rotor at 13.6" and calipers made by brembo - that is a pretty great caliper and rotor. I made mine red to have a little hot spot on the car, most of the car is tinted or blacked out - So I made a stencil and painted in brembo with black over the two part brushed on red caliper paint...

To each their own,
This was done summer of 2005 - it is now spring 2008, no issues.

I painted all four of mine with Silver G2 epoxy and it looks great. Could not get new vinyl decals that would fit so I used ///AMG decals. Yea, I know it's not a C55 but it's better than no lettering at all. Problem is that I've not found anyone that will make vinyl letters that are no longer than 3 1/2" long and 3/8" tall.

I always use High Temp paint, never had an issue, did my rears silver to match the front C32 brakes about a year ago and haven't had an issue.

Anyone have a reliable source for caliper decals that will fit the '05 and newer sport brakes? All the ones I've seen are too long and too tall.

I'm thinking of going red with black brembo lettering on my calipers, but since I have a Pewter car with black lipped color matched wheels, it might stand out too much. Should I go with Black with white lettering instead? Any suggestions? Anybody have pics of red brakes on an 05 Kompressor?
