Engine Mount Replacement

I didn't see a sticky DIY... is there one? Is there a need for one?

I think its time to replace mine... while I'm doing it, should I replace any other mounts? Is there really a differance between the Lemforder and Corteco or should I just purchase genuine MB.

Any help would be appreciated... I really did do a search, but couldn't find anything specific to the actual replacement job itself.

Jason

No, I don't think I've ever seen a DIY on it. I had mine done a year ago, and it's an expensive bill from a mechanic. Good luck, and if you could document it, it would be a great addition here, even if not many people would be brave enough to do it themselves.

This is for the M272 but procedure is the same. Mounts are different.

The rear mount looks like its doable... the fronts?? hmmmnn...

The front mounts... is there a place I could put a floor jack on to raise the engine? Obviously, I'd put a piece of 2X4 somewhere so there isn't metal on metal... or do I really need to get an engine hoist to lift the engine.

How much does this typically cost at the stealership (or indy for that matter)?

If I go through with this, I'll take lots of pictures and write out the steps...

It was not that expensive to have done. The mounts are about $180 from RME and the labor was less than $200 - this was to replace all three mounts.

I paid to have mine done some 40k miles ago. The mounts had really worn down and I had way too much vibration in the chassis. After I got them done, I commented to a buddy how my car now felt like a Mercedes again.

More power to you if you can DIY, but having turned wrenches on cars for 22 years, I have two areas of the car I won't touch. The motor mounts and the drive shaft. At the time I had the mounts done, I also had the drive shaft donought done.

Matt, maybe it wasn't so expensive - it was part of a massive repair early last year, so my memory may be fuzzy. It's hard to keep the repairs seperate.

Hey Seacoupe... are you not touching because of a safety concern, or because its just not worth your time to do it? I received a PM from someone who said they were able to lift the engine from below, and DID NOT remove the entire exhaust to do it.

If so, doesn't seem like it would be all that tough of a job... but then again, if we are only talking about an hour's worth of labor, vs. a few hours of manual labor on my side... I just may elect to have an indy do it for me!

My indy didn't have any issue doing it and it was about 3hr labor for all three mounts. Indeed it did make the car feel a lot better!

Some things I choose not to do because I have screwed them up so badly in the past. I tried to do the drive shafts on two cars, a 74 Camaro and a 79 X1/9. Both had bad results. So drive shafts are off limits to me.

As for the motor mounts, all I have are jack stands, I wondered if I would have enough clearance to properly torque the mounts. Additionally, you need to be able to lift the motor high enough to clear the mounts and put in the new ones.

Motor mounts I might try next time. Driveshaft, no way Jose.

I was quoted 5 hours of labor to change the three moints... Haven't done them yet though.

Upd: here are a couple links on 'tutorials' for CLK:
motor mounts,
tranny mount

VVF... THANK YOU! You've answered one of my questions... where can I lift the engine from below... the 2X10's seem to work fine...

I'm thinking this is a doable job for me... and saving some money to boot!

Wish me luck!

Good luck bro
I think I might just go to the shop - found one euro-shop which quoted me around $300 for labor.

Okay... I was able to replace 2 of the 3 mounts. Passenger side and tranny mount were a piece of cake. That $#$#$!$# driver side is impossible. I have no freaking idea how to replace it... I can't get to the top screw, its covered up with sooo much crap. In fact, I'm not sure how the mechanics get to it.

Can anyone look it up on WIS or something and give me a head's up?

BTW, I was able to replace the mounts without having to remove the exhaust.
I have lots and lots of pictures, and will write it all up... but hoping someone can check on that driver's side instruction set.

Nice work boom. Anxious to hear more about the driver's side myself. Not even a ratcheting wrench could get to it? Ive not seen this top bolt you speak of, but Im just imaging a top bolt in general.

Thats awesome! I don't know the first thing about engine mounts... looking forward to your DIY.
Btw, what were the symptoms you saw that made you want to replace them?

HOLY COW, what a differance the new mounts made. My first newbie post (way back when) asked why this car was so loud... well, now I know... the mounts were trashed. My car is 10X quieter than it was before. There used to be a lot of clanking, ratchety, type noise on startup, at stop signs, at drive throughs... now.. all GONE. And as strange as it may seem... it sorta feels like it handles better.

There is still a rattling noise coming from the drivers side... and I'm assuming its because that mount is gone; and I can't get to it.

BTW, 115K miles on the car... for referance...

S550, and GL450
Same experience

I just had 2 engine mounts and the transmission mount changed on my 05 S500. WHAT A DIFFERENCE! It's like a new car. I always thought my GL 450 was a fine piece of craftmanship; This S500 (now) is tops on my list.

boom132, WIS says "remove the compressor". I have a feeling that it's not an option for you Someone has replaced the driver's side mount himself, but didn't give any specific comments, except that "it was hard to get to the upper bolt" or smth. I thought with a 'flat' wrench you could get to it?

Yes - new mounts can transform the car!

You should get the driver's side mount replaced ASAP. One trashed one can stress the other new ones! I replaced my transmission mount three times before realizing that the engine mounts were broken and causing the transmission mount to break.

I had all three of my mounts replaced at the same time and it did make a big difference in refinement. Also, not surprising it feels like it handles better. The engine shifting around on trashed mounts does have a negative effect on handling. The transmission mount really tightens things up by itself.

Recently replaced both front and rear transmission mounts and the car drives like a dream. I had a shop handle the labor. I'm not messing with the tranny - that is an expensive part. More power to you if you can!

Okay... so (haven't looked yet), is it a pain in the @ss to pull the supercharger? DIY sticky somewhere on that one? I'm telling you... there is so little room to get in there and pull that ONE bolt out. I really can't see how its done without pulling the supercharger...

My mechanic did not pull the supercharger to replace that mount. It can be done. I only paid $194 in labor to have all three changed.

I'm going to check out a local indy here in St. Louis... Have them do just this one mount...
I'll let you know how much it'll cost, and I'm going to ask how they do it. There must be some bent or curved wrench they use...
