Engine shut down when making left turn

I just bought the new C200 Kompressor and drove it for about 2 weeks. The problem found when backing up 90 degree to park a car in aggressive motion. The engine just shut down itself. I brought it to the Mercedes service shop and they said they will try changing the control unit to see if it's going to fix the problem. They are also unsure about the cause of the problem.

Anybody know the cause?

It's a new car and I'm quite disappointed and worried.

This also happened when making a sharp left turn from stand still.

Were you cranking the steering all the way? I think that can put a stress on the engine (hydraulics, etc), but it shouldn't outright stall the car. The experts here can probably tell you. At any rate, please let us know how it turns out.

Was the car low on gas? Did the check engine light turn on?

I had this problem with my 300ZX TT, every time I make a left u, the car stalls on me...

the problem was one of the lines... I forgot what, fuel/air, got pinched by one of the steering components, so the engine was not getting..again, either fuel or air, that is why it stalls...

My memory is bad, it has been over 10 years since I owned that car...

anyways, hope that help.

ahwang,
I have read your thread and not sure if it's exactly the same problem.

I was trying to park the car in the lot (by backing up). The steering wheel was moved as far as I can to the left, so that the car can get into the lot in 90 degree movement. I did it a bit fast and then the engine was shut off (by the computer) I believed. All lights in the dashboard were lighted up. I have to put the gear in "P" and start the engine again.

When I went back home at night I tried the same thing on the road in front of my house. The engine was shut off again!

I brought the car to the authorized dealer and they experienced the same thing as me. They said they ordered the new Control Unit and replaced it. Now they are waiting for the unlock codes from Germany. They think this would help. Not sure when the German office will send them the codes.

Don't want to imagine what will happen if the new Control Unit couldn't fix the problem. I was thinking about requesting a new car or refund. Maybe I need to file a lawsuit.

xyzpl,
and how was your problem solved?

My car has Brabus wheels 8.5x18 front and 9.5x18 rear. I couldn't think of any reasons this will involve. But maybe? Gotta be a good explanation.

Merecedes are meant to only turn right...why would you think they could turn left?

charnchon,

Oh! Sorry to hear this. My problem was 99% similiar to yours, except that my car only stalled out once, and that it happened either turning to the extreme left or extreme right in 90 degree parking. The engine shuts off is because the steering pump draws too much power from the engine in the both locking positions (left and right) and causes the idling dramatrically drop. The "old" ECU does not correct this sudden idling drop and make the engine stall out. I hope your ECU change would correct this issue.

Hi ahwang,

That's right your problem is 99.99% the same as mine. I guessed it happened to the all new W203.

I just got my car back today. They changed the control unit for me. I tested 2-3 times and drove it back to the office.

How was your problem now? Everything OK?

Yep, Mercedes always wants their customers to visit their service as a routine. They fixed 99% of my problem now but left me a mysterious issue. When the car is stop and I tap on the gas pedel and release immediately, the idling fluctuates between 500 and 1500 rpm several time until it becomes stable again. Hopefully the engine won't stall out. Well, even the German cannot address this issue too.

Yes that's true. My Talon idles low and if I made a sharp turn while going very slow or rolling from an idle the idle will drop slightly from the added stress and it can stall out.

I just got my car back yesterday after 3 days in service shop. Everything seemed to be fine (knock wood *knock* *knock*).

It seemed like this is a known issue at Mercedes. They told me that the control unit was changed and the keys were re-programed.
