Weird rattling noise at 3k rpm
I have the rare 2004 C230K 6SPD, I plan on selling it soon because I don't want any expensive problems in the future...
I really need to fix this, any help is appreciated.
Here is a short video of the noise I made... Please excuse my english
Thanks in advance
Any specific parts I should check?
The last thing I want to hear is that it's a transmission problem.
Cats rattle. Are you sure it's the front and not like front center? The video makes it very hard to tell. Does it do it under load too? Or just in neutral?
I just noticed it does it at 1500 too. I read something saying that 1500 and 3000 rpms are the ones that usually makes the most vibrations in the car..
I would really like to fix this myself rather than taking it to a shop because it seems like an easy fix..

Your English is fine. How many miles on your car? I agree with LILBENZ230, it is not a timing chain. It could be something that is vibrating and reaches a resonant frequency, but it seems to have more of a scraping or buzzing quality to it. The sound also seems to indicate that it is a relatively light part. I think a heavier part would make a much different sound - a much lower frequency.
If you could have a friend rev up the car while you record your video, that would help. You might also be able to eliminate the engine as a possibility by putting a long blade screwdriver on different parts of the engine and put your ear up to the handle. It will work like a stethoscope and may help you pinpoint or eliminate things that could cause the noise.
If it is a heat shield or other mounted piece. While your friend is reving the engine, you could use gloves, a piece of wood or anything to hold the suspected pieces. A piece that is causing the noise would probably stop making it when you hold on to it or press on it. It would at least sound different.
Look for something that is not real loose so it would flop around but something that is just a little loose.
Good luck and keep us informed!
I lifted the car and checked the whole exhaust pipe and it comes out that the part that was supposed to be welded to give support to the pipe wasn't fully welded, it was just touching the pipe... I didn't noticed it until I shook the pipe a bit. Thanks guys
