The manual says not to... But if it was really cold I would do it to get it warm inside...

I start it then let it idle down. Once the RPM's drop, off I go. I like to make sure the oil gets to where it needs to be before I move.

30 seconds. Unless you're in the arctic, nothing more is useful. The car sitting there idling in open loop does more harm.

Just drive gently till up to normal temp.

I tend to let it warm until I see something on the temp "gauge". Mostly because driving it gently will get you killed in north Joisey.

I do the same.

The manual really says not to sit idle for long??? Yeah I don't think I've ever read it... not a good car guy.. I don't stop and ask for directions either. =)

I just wait till that valve opens on the M111 after the cat warmer has done it's thing.
Takes a minute or so. Sounds like hell till it opens.

As soon as the fast idle drops to normal (~30 secs), off i go. No need to wait any longer than that.

As lilbenz notes, just don't get all crazy on the cheezwhiz( as in super high revs) until it gets up to normal op temps.

Just don't demand full power or high RPM from the engine until all clearances have normalised & the engine reaches operating temperature. Driving away immediately warms the engine & Cat's fastest. Most wear takes place on cold engines. This is exacerbated by open loop enriched running.

Extended open loop running can cause fuel contamination in the oil, as well. We see this sometimes on cars that do a lot of short trips. Meanwhile I haven't driven my car but twice in the past week.. neglect, I tell you.

I warm it up a little.

Usually it is about 1k rpm, once it drops to about 850, it's a go. Temp still show it's cold and as like others said, light driving brings it to normal temp.

Also, I notice that usually there is a air pump noise and once that is done with, the rpm usually goes down to 850. I heard that the air pump helps to get the engine warm up faster.

Oh, btw, I have a v6, so I don't know if the compressor has this thing or not.

I don't warm it up but I am easy on it. Even in the winter. I just go!

I try to do this, but to be honest, I often just go and try to be easy on it. My wife doesn't at all on her car. Odd that it is the only car I have owned that I didn't.

I will admit mine probably does what many would consider extensive idling.

The updated one? How do you like it? Must feel like a pig compared to the 135.

I like it a lot.. except for the ZF 8-speed automatic. It shifts CONSTANTLY. Great power, though.

Damn, that starts out at 44k. Too bad a manny isn't even offered anymore on it; first gen at least let you order them with it.

It'd be more like $55k before I'd own it. Without the premium package there's not so much as a universal garage door opener.

I do love the smell of a new BMW.

I'd have to agree - at $44k, it looked pretty Toyota-esque. If I'm paying close to $50 large, I'd better get my a$$ surrounded by leather and other creature comforts.
