4-point harness on stock seats possible?

Just as the title says: is it possible to install a 4-point harness on stock coupe seats, or is a seat change mandatory?

I just don't wanna lose the leather and the motorized adjustment, that's all.

Very nice, and the price is reasonable too. How difficult is the installation? Is it a DIY job?

Install is easy enough. Hardest part is the seatbelt receiver on your right hand side. It is difficult to get between the seat and the center console.

I got it on sale for $64.00. Check the site for the current price though.

Just curious, what did you do with the stock belt? Do you have the seatbelt warning light on all the time or did u rig it so it won't light up?

This is the coolest thing...

A four point harness is not DOT approved. You can not use it on the street, plus, everyone would laugh at you.

All you do is unscrew the seatbelt bolt, place the harness piece over the stock seat belt, replace bolt. Stock seatbelts must be used on the road.

When the harness is not in use, it sits on the floor in the back seat. Easy enough...

Schroth also makes these types of belts. Solo Performance is one of their dealers.

Soon-

I am getting a harness / camera mount bar (bolts in across the B pillars on the seatbelt shoulder pivot bolt, then has bracing tie rods that bolt into the forward most bolt on the lower seatbelt bar (coupe).

This will facilitate a 5-point harness (with stock seat) and a dope **** camera mount for videos.... not to mention will make the car legal for track use.

Nice....

I can't show you how to install because I already installed. But I can snap off some pics when I am installing my KLEEMANN stuff and posts pics next week of where I installed the fasteners.

Will do...

I can tell you descriptively now, if you look to where your seat belt (male) attaches to the floor, and where the adapter (female) bolts to the seat, those are the places I install the lap fasteners.

Now, on my coupe, the lower part of the back seat, bolts to the vertical portion of the floor board, just below the seat. It is actually a hinge for the lower seat to flip forward on. There are two bolts cover with small plastic covers. Pop off the covers, I think it is a 15mm nut, remove the nut, pop off the seat, place the fastener over the bolt, replace the seat, replace the 15mm nut.

You now have a four point harness. If the rear seat in the sedan doesn't have these bolts, another option is the rear, seat track bolts. Remove the nuts, lift the rail, place the fastener over the bolt, replace the rail, replace the nut.

I am going to have to drill into the floor for the five point.

The stock belt attachment stays there. You just add the harness.

Remove bolt, add harness end replace bolt through harness and stock seatbelt, and tighten.

Shucks, the way I see it, at least we are doing something different!

The one I am getting is cool. It is actually for a porsche, but...

Here is how it works. On the B pillars is the pivot for the stock seat belt. You pop off the the plastic cover, and bolt the bar into that fixture. The bar goes across the entire width of the car. The plastic piece pops right back on.

Then, for additional support, etc., there are those tierods. The little U bar that the coupe has has two bolts on each side. The lap belt affixes to the forward most bolt. The tie rod to the rear bolt. The stock seatbelt again remains in place on both front seats. But then I can attach a real harness, the shoulder straps to the bar, the lap belts as I said, then I have to get under the seat for the fifth point for both seats. The camera mount attaches to the bar in the middle.

For me it is just going to make it fun to watch people TRY to get into the back seat...

Next I need to find a CF hood. The custom coupe that is on tour with the C spot thing has one, but no one there knew where it came from... Black wheels, black CF hood, black pano roof, silver car, with black sponsor stickers. That's all I really want look wise. I was actually thinking about having the C7 sand blasted and powder coated, but they are just too heavy for my needs.

The seat track bolts are NOT a good place to mount the harness. First, they are probably not strong enoung. Second the angle of the belt coming over the seat is too extreme. A serious incident could cause the belts to collapse the seat, which almost always causes sever spinal injuries.

Lynn - unfortunately, he already knows about that. I'm hoping that he gets the bar that goes between the B pillars sooner rather than later, so that he can correctly attach the 5-pt. Of course, then it's up to debate if the B pillar bar is strong enough vs. a proper rollbar/rollcage.

Luckily, he's short and 120 lbs, so that spine compression isn't as much of an issue to members of the Lollipop Guild.

Alright, enough already from the Fat Kid Club....

I moved the harness shoulder straps back to the rear seat seatbelt mount. I had removed the little form middle section, effectively dividing the the rear seat. So, I returned it back to the way it was.

I am a dorky hunch back anyway, the seat collasping might even be a good thing

A roll bar is a little ways down the road. I need to figure out if this is going to be the track car I build or, should I build an old 190E 16v as a purpose built track car... =)

If the B pillar is built to securely hold the seatbelt? Why can't two hold the 5 point?

Ok, I just need to chime in before someone hurts him/herself. I'm only harsh on this because I've seen too many idiots do it wrong (not saying you're one)...

Harnesses are a good idea but you NEED to make sure that the mounting angle for the shoulder harnesses are correct. Anything lower than a 30degree drop will risk serious spinal cord injury. During an accident, the force will pull down and compress the spine. I'm sick and tired of people mounting show harnesses in their cars and mounting them direct to the seat track-mounts. Sure the lap belts are ok to mount there but the shoulders are definitely not.

If you're going to be serious about a harness, make sure it's installed properly. Having a harness bar surely helps but don't be a gimp and try to have rear passengers with it. At least if you do, buy helmets w/ face guards for them so they still keep their teeth when you brake too hard.

There are also plenty of accessories that help you detach the harness when you're not using them. Harnesses have accessories too. Check them out. http://simpsonraceproducts.com/produ...&start=1&sort=

Also, SFI Approved does not mean street legal. Keep your original in place. Lastly, check the dates on your harnesses. Harnesses do expire and they need to be replaced routinely. If they don't have tags or expiration dates, then get real harnesses that do.
