2005 Mercedes C230 Check Engine light

Hello,

Well, my C class has 140,000 miles on it. Very VERY Well maintained. Never faced any major or minor issues with it (just the normal stuff like battery died after 5 years, alternator was rattling after 6 years was charging ok but i changed it anyway) thats about it)

Today the engine light came on while on the highway. The car feels sounds and drives normally (Trust me after 7 years i know exactly how the car should drive, sound, feels, and even smell!)

Engine starts normally, no rattles, vibrations, and cold starts are normal too.

What could it be?

MAF, O2 sensor, etc. Anything really.
What you need to do is get an OBDII scanner and read the code(s).
For comparison, my MAF failed at around 115k miles.

Welcome to the forum!

It could also be a random misfire from spark plugs being old... They're supposed to be done at 70k-ish miles so if you got them done then, it may be time for new ones again. I agree though, your best bet is getting the scanner so that you can let the car tell you what it needs. There could be a plethora of things at this age and mileage. Welcome to the forum!

Could be a squirrel, EMP, or alien abduction, too. Really no way to know without codes. Autozone will do it for free for you.

the beauty of cars these days is that if you have the right tool (OBDII scanner) your car will tell you what is wrong. This inexpensive tool (~$150 for the more detailed ones and <$60 for very basic ones) for the DIYer will pay dividends and take the stab in the dark approach guess work out.

I learned the hard way when my car was just off warranty and did not have the tool and it threw the 'check engine light' and which turned out to be a temp sensor (easy to change) the part was about $20 but the labour and scan at the dealer added another $180 which would have covered the cost of the scanner and the part + a case of beer. I then quickly bought a top of line Innova scanner from Amazon for about $130.

The only problem with the scanner is it is like having a pickup truck, everyone now wants to borrow it

Then just don't tell anyone you have it
I have mixed feelings about letting others borrow one's tech...
Sometimes people just don't treat your things as well as they would if they were their own...

C230K motor

Hello.
I have a MB C180K and know its engine is a 1800 cc. I am deciding to move to a C230K. The seller tells me its engine is a 2300cc. Could anybody comment, please? Thanks

Hello, I had a problem like that. I agree you need to use a scanner. I did so and found it was the lambda sensor not working. Changed it and this was it

False...all of them are 1.8L, from the c180 to the c230.
