i have read so many different opinions on upgrading an instrumet cluster on a 2002 w203 with one out of a 2005 w203. i am interesed in hearing more about this idea. I have bought an instrument cluster from a 2005 w203 and installed it in my 2002 model and all the lights on the cluster lit up except for the section between the two gauges which show mileage etc, etc.
i am aware that the milages is stored in a seperate computer on this model and im not sure if it is that because the two milages did nt match was the reason the center section did not display.
i was told that the reason was that the cluster was nt talking to the computer and that mercedes could marry up the two,the tacho was nt working neither were the gauges just all the warning lights lit up eg. hi beam, srs, esp etc etc look forward to any input regards lou

This can't really be done on your own. Some independent mechanics with the STAR system would be able to pair the two for you (though I think it's a little more complex), but usually you would have to go through the dealer. Only problem is, you're probably screwed because just a simple pairing will not display mileage. Mileage is stored in the cluster, as it is in the cars computer. If they don't match, the mileage would show as "--------". There is a very complex way to do it so it shows the mileage, but I don't for the life of me know anything about it.

 

From my understanding once a cluster hits 1,000 miles you can no longer mate it with a different car.

 

i recently changed my stereo in my w203, it came with a canbus box so the unit can be controlled with the steering wheel buttons, in saying this i bought a 2005 w203 instrument cluster and pluged it in and everything lit up as in all the warning lights but the actual gauges did nt work. any help would be appreciated regads lou

 

2005 w203 instrument cluster should be work in older models. For example i have a w203 2003 with 2006 w203 instrument cluster all gauge working fine but the radio control not working and of course the millage reading.

 

i wish i knew why the one i bought isnt working, if anybody knows weather the canbus i got with my new stereo could stop them from working id be interested in knowing.when i plug the cluster in all the lights light up eg, the hi beam, srs, indicators etc but the tacho fuel speedo and temp gauge do absolutely nothing. From what i ve heard they should all work and should only have an issue with the milage and possibly the fuel gauge, again thanks to all for helping me with this problem regards lou

 

ok here we go again. as much as i would like to get this later model w203 cluster to work i am open to suggestions as to what other cluster i can get to work i like the w209 gauge but not have have heard too many guys trying to get one of these to work. I think thats the one with the big speedo/ digital readout in the centre. look forward to replies regards lou

thanks for replying man. I actually have a 2002 G500, and I know the G and C-class share a lot of similar stuff. And I want to upgrade my instrument cluster to the newer AMG style which is facing the same issue of the c-class. I have read many threads and learned that in order for the new instrument cluster to work, I need to change my fuel sender to match the newer cluster, so that my fuel indicator will work. (Right now is not working because it’s not plug-in and play). I have asked local guys using STAR system and they can’t do it, and a cluster professional to program it, still wouldn’t work. ( that’s with the new CAN module I bought online for $500, supposed to balance the issue). Do you know how to properly get this thing upgraded and tell us what parts we need to get it done? I don’t mind spending a bit money to get it done right. Thanks!

Non AMG for me with silver plating...

I’m informed it will work better with Distronic (once it’s fully functional)...

Please, share the PHYSICAL alterations needed...I have my w209 and w203 cages ready to machine/Dremel.

I know there will be a little gap in corners.
