Rattling 1.8 Engine at Idle - sounds cheap
The engine sounds terrible at idle- like a cheap GM 4 cylinder with lifter rattle.
Overall I love the coupe and it runs strong- it's just a little disappointing in this caliber of a car.
Also I have been away from this forum for a while- has there been any news on the intermittant hesitation on hard acceleration?
Thanks for any info!

I can hear mine 'rattle' at the drive-thru window, if my window is open. From inside the car, you can't hear the rattle. For this reason, I don't believe it's the engine (which you would probably hear at all times - even in the car).

Right- I dont hear the noise inside the car- just outside and next to buildings- drive-thrus and such.
Engine or SC it's not good either way.
I will be going in for the first scheduled maintanence soon and I will see what they say.

Keep in mind that the supercharger is simply a belt-driven air compressor. If you've ever worked around compressors, you know that they make noise when operating, and I don't know how you could resolve that (other than isolating it in a sound-insulated box of some type).
This may be part of the reason that MB seems to be getting away from superchargers in their product line-up.

The noise you hear is the blowoff value open during warmup. It lets the converter get up to temperature to cut down on emissions. Nothing to worry about. It's just one of the quirks of owning this type of car. My 2002 does it really bad on startup but quits within a minute or so and the idle smooths out. Once you know what it is I kind of enjoy the sound!!!
Keep in mind the supercharger is only working when needed; the rest of the time it's just spinning along. Enjoy your car and stop worrying about nothing.
