I wonder if people in Germany have decided to drive slower on the autobahn because of the increase in fuel costs.
I never complain about high gasoline prices and I have not adjusted my driving pattern because of it.
However, I do worry about the stagflation it will cause everywhere else.
I only use premium unleaded fuel from Chevron or Shell. To use 87/89 is very poor for the ignition timing of the vehicle. There also may be a small power loss and a small penalty on fuel economy. I once saw a BMW 750i at a Shell gas station in Irvine I frequent filling up on mid-grade. I felt so bad for that car I really wanted to go up to the owner and plead him to give the car premium and I would pay the difference. Poor poor poor car; a 750i wasn't designed to have such a cruel life and be living on mid-grade. Must've been a leased car. I still feel sorry for this car, even though this incident was observed nearly three months ago.

He was wondering what type of car it would have been. The pump doesn't zero out until you begin your transaction, so it's simple to see how much a previous car pumped.
Most likely a huge Escalade or Hummer.

I pump that (18+) every time I fill up my old Jeep Cherokee. Lots of U.S. manufactured cars have 20-22 gallon tanks. The Hummer H2 has a 32 gallon capacity! At that pumps $4.57, a H2 fill up could cost around $145!

What do you guys think about Octane boosters? My old MB mechanic on my old 1984 380SL told me they do something to the catalytic converter that is not good.
I could not run 87 on my older MB V8 beasts without knocking.
Have you guys heard of this?

I saw this on eBay advertised for C Class Mercedes, they do make others to fit our fuel lines. Makes me crazy thinking about all this.

I recently read an article about poor fuel quality and random testing done for government required detergent additives. The investigation began after GM found themselves making unexpectedly high fuel injector repairs in the state of Florida. Off brand gasoline of all grades often tested below the required levels. Testers found that when the suppliers advertised high or quality additive content, they not only met, but exceeded by many time the government required levels. Shell and Chevron were 3 to 5 times the minimum on average.
Other additives prevent carbon build ups on intake valves and elsewhere.
Cheap gas may not be just an octane issue.
I'd have to see some independent tests of the fuel line products. Seems a bit of smoke, mirrors and snake oil, but I think most people trying to sell me something are full of bs anyway.

4.20 for 91 when I filled up in North Florida this morning. total bill was $59 and some change. I have heard that some people go for the middle grade and use octane booster.. anyone do this?
#618
use 89octane gas..... on a road trip in the middle of nowhere TX I went for the 89 since the 91 was $4.69...about .50 more than in civilization...long story short about 60 miles past the fill up the check engine light came on...I was fairly certain that the gas was the issue...in civilization I filled up with 91 and about 50 mile into that tank the light turned off.....

Related Question
I have hard time finding 91 octane in Northern NJ. It is always 89 or 93. Does anyone know what companies sell 91 octane?
BTW, Shell V-Power goes for about $4.30/gallon give or take.
Article in Washington Post over the weekend said that we still pay a lesser percentage for gas than in 1980...and I used to just drive my dad's car with my friends like there was no tomorrow....Lord, please forgive me.

Recently I was reading the Wikipedia entry on superchargers. One of the sections, devoted to octane states,
"Higher octane fuel burns slower at the same temperature than low octane fuel, reducing the risk of detonation. As a result, the amount of boost supplied by the superchargers could be increased."
Maybe you guys all knew that, but heck, I learn something every day...
Yet another reason not to deprive your kompressor on the next fill-up.
