when i get a courtesy car from MB while my car is being serviced i would put in 91 and i can feel the diference. i always, always put in 94. i know most states in the US do not have 94. here in vancouver we do and it makes a HUGE difference. i cannot imagine using anything lower.
so now i've been using 94 and i'll never use anything lower than that cause the car's performance just seems to be better.
the car seems smoother and sounds better too!

For those using lower octane than 91, please do not start a thread months down the line entitled "MB quality is crap! My engine broke down after only X years" or "Why am I hearing all this noise in my engine" or "HELP! My Car broke down and I don't know why".
Seriously...Using less than 91 octane will work. It will also save you a little money in the short term. However, in the Long term, you're basically making your car work harder than necessary. Eventually, it will break down all the internals faster than normal. Anybody ever heard the term "use the right tool for the right job"? Well, this is similar. You've gotta treat that engine well (especially if your car is force induction - i.e. supercharged/turbocharged - which obviously, would only be a few MB's as far as turbo).
I personally use Shell w/ V Power (91) and/or Chevron w/ Techron. I've found that Shell gas provides better fuel economy and allows the car to run smoother than any other gasoline by FAR. Chevron w/ Techron would be 2nd. If worse comes to worse and I can't find either of these, I'll go with Exxon or Mobil (91 of course).
Unfortunately, due to Cali's strict smog laws, there are not many gas stations that offer above 91 octane. There are no 93 octane pumps that I'm aware of, but there are race pumps out there that are 97 (but they also charge twice the amount of 91)?...Someone in So-Cal correct me if I'm wrong.

When your fuel door sticker say "Premium Required" it does not mean, you should put in regular.
On some cars it says "Premium Recommended", that means you can use whatever grade of gas you want.

Additionally, putting premium in a car that runs well on regular is wasting money. Contrary to popular belief, premium is not cleaner or "better" in a general sense of the term. Put whatever gas your car recommends/specifies/requires.

Putting in premium in your car designed to run well on regular usually does nothing. You can go ahead and try it in all your cars designed to run regular, but if there is no noticeable difference, then it is a good idea to go back to regular. I have even heard premium can slightly "hurt" performance/mileage on some cars.
Essentially, all cars are tuned and timed (ignition wise) differently. Some cars are designed around regular fuel, and primarily regular fuel. Ignition timing is retarded enough to allow for the fuel. Some cars will adapt, and will accept all kinds of grades from regular to plus to premium. Other cars like Mercedes, have advanced timing and are designed to operate on premium. Mercedes, as well as any other car make which mandates premium, utilizes advanced ignition timing and tune to optimize efficiency in output of the motor and the maximize fuel economy.
It's like putting 100 octane race gas in my S430 with bone stock tune. If anything, I will harm the motor overtime with it. Forced induction engines are a different story as boost can often be increased with higher octane fuel.

why does this always friggin come up? it's one of the most annoying questions I've seen. it's one of the most prominent questions in the w203 forum. it's an extra 10 cents per gallon!
are people so hard up to pay for their car payments that they have to nickle and dime everything? can't you even see the long term and short term damage that you could do to your car? that'll cause you more money in the long run? trying to save a dollar will most likely make you spend hundreds in the future.
like the old adage goes, if you have to ask...

Andy, do you think you could please pm me the list? I want to try some out (not a full tank, but a mixture of 100 and 91). Thanks!

I ALLLLWAYS put in 94. Thats the highest here (lame), anyone with higher octane? What about those 'octane boosters', are they safe to use?
I need 94, car struggles to start with lower ones when the temperature is below -30'C

I just noticed that your display doesn't show how much gas you have in your tank... no i'm not referring to the needle but the electronic display
