my wife drives a Lexus Rx330 and she actually pays less to fill up her SUV as I do to fill out my C240. Her Lexus runs fine on 87 gas.

Your car will run fine on 87 too, but that doesnt' mean you should do it.
The cost savings pretty much cancel themselves out after you take in account the lesser gas mileage from the lesser gas.

MB's run just fine on 87. I've been running it on regular for over a year now and it runs great. I get pretty much the same mileage, but i do live in LA, so my mpg is bad either way. Also leasing the car so i'm not concerned about the long term probles. MB service can't do anything about it either as i've read from a dif. thread. This topics been dicussed in other threads.

In Boston, there's 87, 89, 91, and 93.

93 is around 3.15-3.65 depending on the part of town. I've used 93 everytime.

Just wondering... Stations around here sell only 93 octane, but the car says it wants 91. So, if you have half a tank of 93, does topping off with midgrade (89) bring the composite total octane of the tank to the required 91? Just wondering...

I occassionally will run a tank of 89, but lately tend to buy from a local Tom Thumb station, where I can use my Tom Thumb Grocery Reward Card to buy 93 octane at a 6 cent per gallon discount. This makes Premium almost as cheap as midgrade anyway.

Here we have two owned by the same parent company stations. One sells midgrade with 10% ethanol, 90 Octane, for a 10 cent discount making it 1 cents cheaper than regular whereas another sells 89 Octane midgrade without ethanol for 4 cents cheaper and 91 Octane for 6 cents cheaper with a card similar to your TT card. Looks like TT is owned by the same parent company as well. Price difference between all 3 is 9 cents grade to grade.

You have got to be kidding?

The octane of fuel is very important to how an engine burns that fuel to make power. On a forced induction engine (i.e. supercharged or turbo charged) higher octane fuel is a necessary, not an option. Yes, the engine will still run, but the horsepower will go down and with it, the longevity of the engine. The ignition advance will still be set, via the PCM, for higher octane, which causes the engine to "ping" or detonate. You need to think of it like this... Would you run a different oil through your engine than what MB specifically said it should run on? Not likely. Our cars only hold about 15 gallons of gas. If 91/93 octane gas is 30 cents more than regular, and you are on dead empty, it will only cost you a mere 4.50 to put in it what the engine needs. If you don't have and extra 4.50... you need to buy a Kia. It's really not as big a deal when you actually do the math.

we have 91, 92 and 93 here in OH. i fill up on 93 since it is the same price as the 92 and occassionally even 91. on tuesdays, shell in my area has the price of 93 the same as the price of 89.

fyi: i get 28 mpg. anyone lower than 91 have their mpg for comparison?

If you look at your MB owner's manual there should be a section on fuels that addresses this.

Lower octane than what is listed in your owners manual is not recommended by MB.

However if you are forced to use a lower grade MB recommends (1) NOT topping off the tank, (2) get it filled with premium as soon as you can, and (3) while the mixture of premium and less than premium is being used, you should not do full throttle acceleration and you will want to limit the engine speed, useually to somewhere around 3000 rpm.

I recall in one of the threads, someone said you could use lower grade gasoline on the C-class sedan/coupe. However, the car would consume more lower grade gasoline than it would with the recommended grade gasoline. Thus, in the end, you don't save anything by filling up with lower grade gasoline.

Don't know if that is true or not but I always fill my car up with 91 oct gas.

I myself use 91. I usually fill up at chevron and I will never get gas while those tankers are filling up the station.

I have used 87 for over a year and the car runs totally fine. Anyways it is true you get worse got mileage, but i was driving in LA everyday so in the end I would lose money by filling up with 91. The gas mileage dif between 87 and 91 in constant traffic wasn't that big.
But now i'm using 91 once again mainly for the following reason. I got to college now in Irvine so most of my driving is always on the freeway. In this case the gas rating plays a big dif. I would get around 25-27 using 87 and 30-32 with 91. Also has prices have dropped so it's not that big of a deal anymore.

Mercedes recommends "unleaded" fuel for all their cars and there must be a reason for that. I personally put in 91, no question about it. For all you using lower octane gas, it may not be damaging your wallet but it sure is damaging engine internals. If the dealer takes it apart and sees abnormal combustion I don't think it is covered under warranty... or I might be wrong, but that's just my $0.02
