I had a w202 c220 and with 95 oct. gasoline the engine didn't run like using the 98 oct., I'm using in all my current gasoline cars (only my 01' jag xkr ) 98 oct gasoline and in my all other cars (diesel versions) a rich cetane diesel (also shell v-power diesel), and it makes some difference

Do we really need 93 octane gas?
I rented a MB c240 for a week and just put regular 87 gas into it and it ran without problems are any noticeable loss in power.
Other luxury cars (example lexus) run fine on regular gas. What makes mercedes motors so special that they must run on 93 gas?

Higher octane gas burns cleaner, less crap leftover in your engine. Also by burning cleaner it is supposed to give you more power and better gas milage. At times I have thought I felt more power, maybe it was just me, but I have also seen the increase in gas milage. I am basing this on other cars that I have had, so far, I have not put anything less than 93 octane in my C230SS.

Regular in a C230 doesn't make sense, you'll probably lose about 15-20hp and you'll likely get lose about 2-3 mpg so you won't be saving any money. On a C240, sure, it's different. There's probably not much of a difference, specially in a damp climate like Missouri. In arid climates like in the southwest on a hot day, where lower octane fuel can cause pinging, the difference in fuel consumption and performance is more noticible.

If your owners manual doesn't say "Premium required" then you can use regular
If it DOES SAY "Premium Required" then you better give it the GOOD STUFF!
"Premium Recommanded" means you can use regular~

Just wondering.
And the reason they need Premium in the Benz is because that is what the engine is tuned for. You run less octane and risk the poosibility of detonation(pinging) and that will slowly destroy your engine. So you decide if you want to save a buck or two and risk your engine dying right as your warranty runs up. A hole in a piston is not a good thing! Makes the engine run much worse. The Engineers at MB decided on High Octane and thus set the timing to the appropriate place for that fuel. The ECU will back off timing once it senses detonation. It does this very fast so you may not even ever notice it happening. The problem is that with too much detonation comes blown pistons or other internal damage. The 20 cent a gallon diference in price between Super and Regular gasoline will save you a whopping 3 Bucks in most cases. That in real world terms is about 1 cup of specialty coffee a week. If you own a Benz and can not afford to spend the extra 3 bucks a fill-up to have your engine run properly than maybe you made the wrong decision when you bought the car! Sorry but I like my car running within proper specs as it was designed to do. And if I could not afford the extra gas then I should not have bought the car! Just my opinion though....

I've run Premium 93 octane in my C320 for the first 4-years and 39,000 miles of ownership.
Just a month ago, I decided to try midgrade (89 octane). I'm on my third tank... Runs just fine, no difference in power or mileage, no MFD warning about inferior fuel, etc. Who cares if it saves any money... I just wanted to see if it works OK. And it does, so far. Consumer Reports may be right, afterall.

lower octane gas can be used but will decrease performance and gas mileage and cause more build up resulting in more engine wear. i usually fill up once i hit about a quarter of a tank, so being that 93 octane will provide some benefits, i'll dish out the additional $2 per fill up over 87 octane. i actually would never even consider 87 octane. MAYBE 89, but i don't think i've ever used anything but 93 except on rental cars except once in my bmw. car was basically running on fumes and the station i pulled into only had 87 and 89. put in 89 and i noticed a difference. mainly in acceleration. even my nissan maxima recommended 91 octane minimum in the owners manual, but since it's almost non-existent in my area, i used 93. usually if a certain minimum grade is recommended in the manual, that's what the ecu is programmed for so i wouldn't put anything less in.

Unleaded Fuel
I was not paying attention and put unleaded gas in my 2004 C230K Sedan instead of premium. Will this cause a problem for this one tank? I put about 3/4 of the tank in as Unleaded.

No. 1, it' all unleaded. No.2, just fill the rest of the tank with premium unleaded and drive on. You "might" notice a slight descrease in performance, but that's it.

Could be worse... You could be driving a E320 CDI and put regular 87 in the tank instead of diesel... KABOOM!!! Thats extremely dangerous... Ive seen boats that almost sank because the engine blew up, litterally, due to puting in the gasoline into a diesel engine.
