2003 MB C230 coupe
i will never lease a car. i get to attached to cars to let them go after 3 years. don't you lose money in the end with leasing everytime anyway? kind of like the equivalent of renting vs. buying a house.

I don't believe in leasing. All my cars are bought and paid in full in cash. I don't like not owning my vehicle because it's actually the bank's for 39 months.

I leased on purpose. Kind of like forced discipline. I get tired of cars VERY quickly, and wind up selling them. Admittedly not the best financial decisions. SO I am now "forced" to keep my 230k for 3years....

Leased
I have one car leased and one truck financed.
I prefer the lease over the finance.
In my experience, leasing is good for 4 reasons.
If you have a business it's a "no brainer". It's a big write off.
Second, if you don't want to spend a big chunk of money. You can get a more expensive car if you lease.
Third, if you want a brand new car every 3 years. I usually have the itch at about the 2.5 year mark.
Last, it's a better experience with the dealer. Everything is covered under the warranty for the entire lease period. Doesn't matter what it is, the dealer fixes it with no hassles because they know their most likely going to get the car back. That alone is a big plus!!!
This is my 2nd lease and I haven't lost any money, except for the mods to the car. I think I will keep leasing for now.

Leased car from Bensel Busch in Englewood. So far, it's been a good experience. The Salesman is good with responding to any questions I have even after leasing 9 months ago. Hope he's still around at the end of my lease for the the next one.
I also went to Prestige in Paramus but wasn't crazy about the salesman. Too Pushy.

If you stay within the terms of the lease, and negotiate a good sale price from the beginning, you'll be fine. The only people who get killed on leases are people who know very little about it, and have no business leasing in the first place.

Couldn't have said it better myself.
Leasing is not for everyone. Especially if you have a big commute or like to seriously mod. It can actually be more cost effective because it keeps you from spending a fortune on modding the car. Believe me, I'd like to change a few more things on the car but it's really not necessary.
My father-in-law has leased for at least 12 years now and he has not lost a dime. He actually does real well because he's been staying with the same dealer. He turns them in 4 months early and never reaches into his pocket for a down payment or security deposit. He just leased a second car from a different dealer and got an insane price. I almost bought one with him!
It's all about negotiation! The biggest mistake people make is taking the first deal they get. You have to play there game and always go to more than one dealer.

ya, leases arent all that bad... it depends on what was negotiated within your deal... I leased my car but that doesnt stop me from modding it... I can always sell the parts off when I return the car...

I don't get leasing. For example a new 2004 S430 is $74,000 give or take. The lease is around $1,100.
So...after 39 months (without tax) you paid $43,000 for a $74,000 car and you keep nothing.
If you bought the car for $74,000 and sold it after 39 months you don't think you could sell it for $31,000?
Sorry, someone explain this to me. The only reason I can see why people lease is they cannot afford the car but they can afford the payments.
Notice how the price of cars on the road increased drastically after leasing came out?
Finance I completely understand...eventually you will own the car and you don't want to part with the full amount right away. It's not for me, but at least I understand that one.

well technically leasing is for people that want to change their car every couple of years... thats the advantage of it... when your lease is up, you return the car and get another model... and usually dont have to pay any downpayment yet keep the installments about the same even if you get a higher priced model...

1. Dealers treat leased cars better cause eventually they may get them back.
2. Leased cars are usually completely covered under warranty - no extra expenses, no extended warrantees.
3. Business - write off.
4. Business - show off - buy a more expensive car to make a better expression without ponying up the big $$$ - lawyers are a good example, are you going to hire the lawyer who drives a Civic or a C-class?
Leasing has been bad cause many are returned in very poor shape..
I chose to lease as a method of "extended financing", I could not afford to finance, chose to lease, will pay $3-5K CND extra in the end, yet at 23 years old when I leased the car, and even now at 25, that $3-5K is worth the pleasure of driving such a nice car at my age and no amount of money will ever beable to replace it later in life.

Very true. My friends all went over the miles permitted. I think my primary reason for not leasing a car was the miles. I also didn't like the fact that I would never truly own the car without making monthly payments. I guess leasing works for some people but it doesn't make too much sense to me either tifosiv122.

I don't think the dealers take better or worse care of leased vehichles...
1. They don't get the cars back, the company does...IE MB North America.
2. They make more money off of purchases (usually) and would rather keep those customers happy.
I understand the write off part, and I said its for people to afford cars they otherwise couldn't, but there is no way I would pay $43,000 for a car only worth $74,000 and get nothing in the end.
If you keep your car in nice shape you should be able to sell it for more then that afterwards.
Personally I know I would never buy a car off lease I see what some of my friends do to their cars...because it's 'not my car, who cares!'

If your stockbroker told you to buy a stock, and he guaranteed it will decline, would you buy the stock?
Well thats what a car is: A depreciating asset. You buy it and its value goes down immediately, and it continues that trend, until maybe one day it becomes a classic or 'antique'. But these Benz's we drive ain't no Hemi....
Couldn't be simpler my friend.
