Voltage regulator removal on W203 C220CDI (2002)

Hello every body;

I need to change the Voltage regulator on alternator of my W203 C220CDI Coupe Sport (2002).
Is it possble to remove it without removing the alternator?

In advance thanks for help

the question is why?
Modern alternators work by inducing current in the stator by the moving rotor. The voltage regulator modulates the rotor current thru the slip rings thereby adjusting the Stator current and voltage. The regulator is normally part of the brush assembly and rectifier diodes. Maybe even the main engine ECU may do the regulation while monitoring battery voltage and other loads.

I'm not familiar with your model as we didn't get the diesels here, but from my experience with alternators from that era, they're typically Bosch or Valeo. Assuming it's an I4 diesel and that they used the same model alternators as the gas engines, access to the back of the alternator should be fairly easy where you can remove the regulator while the alt is still in the car....If it's a Bosch. If you have a Valeo, don't waste your time, replace the whole alternator, I've yet to have a regulator fix a Valeo.

Thank you for your replies.
the replies went to the SPAM box!!
I spent a lot of time beneath the car to see wheter it is possible or not.
I don't have yet the answer.
I could neither see whether it is Valeo or Bosh unit ( it is just crazy)
I took some pictures;
Is it possible to say which make is the alternator that is mounted on my car.
Thanks in adavnce

I'm sorry I don't recognize that one at all, its definitely different then the two I had in my mind. Looks almost like one of the water cooled ones from a V12.

Thank you johnef,

you are right it is one that is water cooled despite the engine is a 4cylinders ( C Class Sport Coupé 220CDI).

I forgot to mention (mea culpa).

Do you know whether the regulator is to be found as spare parts?

Thanks in advance for help

If its water cooled I doubt very much you will find spares..aftermarket maybe but usually they don't work with Lin bus. It may charge but display on dash may stay on warning about check battery

thank you Russell Ormerod,
the message on the display is effectively "low voltage consumers will be shut off" see picture. Then I believe that the regulator or the brushes are going out.
Is there something else that could give that bad message ( SAM module , fuse ...)?
Any advice is welcome
Thanks

I had a Bosch in an M111 engine. I can't imagine the gymnastics that would be required to remove the regulator and brushes. Again, I don't have your engine, but, I would just take the unit off and have it serviced. Better to do it right once and be done with it.

Absolutely. Take the alternator off. far easier than trying to fit it in place
