MBZ extended warranty any good?

Over the weekend, my parent had purchase a 2004 C240. At the end of it all, they were offer an extended warranty from MBZ good for 3 extra year and up to 100k miles. Price of this extra protection was ~$3k. What's your thought and feelings about this?

BTW, I've search but didn't seem like the extended warrenty was from MBZ so that's why I post as a new topic.

Thanks.

$3,000 seems a little high, but every has their own opinion on what the warranty is worth. I just recently bought a starmark C320 and I paid $1500 for an additional 3 years (for a total of 4). Previously I owned a CLK55 and I would be very scared to own that thing out of warranty. I used to tell my service advisor that I wanted to just set up a standing montly service appointment because the car breaks so much. Most people here seem to have better results with their C-Classes then what I had with my CLK but I wanted that extra warranty just to be sure.

If they bought this car new (you didn't say), then they have 1 year to decide if they want the warranty or not. After that they can not buy it.

That price is outrageously high - there are lots of sources within the MB dealer community that will heavily discount the factory extended warranty.
For a starting quote, go to the MB dealer in Chico, CA [use the MBUSA website to locate them]. The F & I manager there [who used to be Lisa, may have changed] should be able to give you a quote that will be among the lowest in the country. It should be under $2000 for the full 7/100 coverage.

My selling dealer in Sacramento CA agreed to match whatever price I brought to them on the warranty, so I got it from them at the lowest price; I can't recall the exact amount, but it was under $1800 for a C240.

think of having to pay for a couple service items, it may pay for itself. a gamble you may have to take. i paid $2400 for my 7yr/100kmi warranty. i think its worth it personally.

It all depends on how creative your math is. The way I look it is that what does it cost to own the car for 7 years in depreciation, additional maintenance and this warranty. Then I compare this to owning the car for 4 years, sell it and then buy another one to start the warranty and free maintenance over again. What I've found is that consistantly, it's cheaper to buy a new car every 4 years than to pay $3k for an extended warranty.

Well, he told me that the full price is like $3.5k but was giving my parent for like $2.8k. In which he say it's fully refundable if you don't use it from the 4th year to the 7th year.

Let's say that my parent decide 2 years later that they want/need this. Is it possible to go back to the dealership and ask for it?

You believe a stealership salesmonkey. Make him put it in writing. Make sure you get management signature as well.

Nope. Wake up. When have you ever seen anything that you bought; didn't use/unpack/etc and then come back months/years later for a return and get all of your money back. If any at all.

true, i waited about 7 months until i bought mine. the main reason is because i plan to keep this car for about 6-7 years. spend the extra money on mods and love my color.

We bought ours about 13 months ago for $1600 CDN (roughly $1200 US) from Three Point Motors in Victoria BC. Adds three years and takes the "mileage" limit to 160,000 km. Based on the fact that this car is a keeper and it's had a few warranty issues so ar, it's money well spent.

The last car I had that was a bit of a lemon in the first year is the 1989 Peugeot 405 I still own. She had lots on minor trim/electrical crap failing in the first three years, but from then on she's been nearly infallible. 16 years on (built in July 1988) and 320,000 km (198,700 miles) behind her, she's still going strong and will probably keep going another few years. No major repairs at all, even has the original clutch...heh heh the benefits of double clutching...

our extended warranty for mine and my sis's CLK cost about $2000 each. I think it's worth it because it covers everything that was covered on the original warranty. The only thing sucks about it is they don't cover loaner vehicle, so you have to make sure you have a ride outta there when you service the car.

Yeah, I thought paying $3k was a bit much but he did show me that someone else had paid $3.5k earlier that day. So it made it like a good deal. Who knows if it's really true or not. I guess I'll just wait and see how the car is for a year before coming back to this issue.

Thanks to all who reply.

You have upto 12 months to get the warranty. It should be under $1700. You can call around the country to get the best price. My stealer wanted full price, $2800. A dealer in Chico CA quoted me $1690 and could do it via phone.

When I call different stealership, whom do I ask to speak to about this? Sales? Finances? Parts? I was thinking the guy was doing me a favor by offerring me a lower price. I wonder now if the guy printed some bogus sheet first thing he gets in everyday to show to the customers later on the day.......
