What I mean is that the M3 is by comparison a souped up grocery-getter(i hate to say it because I love the car too) Literally, it is a car that is designed to be a basic 4 seater, front engine, nice handling grocery-getter - that someone has gone to town on, and turned into a mean street machine.

If you had to pick the optimal configuration to run on a track, you would logically select the Porsche over the M3. On the track - fast in corners is where is counts.

It isn't a V6, it is a flat 6. Better still!!!

The center of gravity on the Boxter is probably about a good foot lower than the M3.

Boxter-s starts at $52K US vs the M3 Convert. starting at $57KUS.

The 0 to 60 on the M3 Conv. is 5.4 vs 5.7 on the Porsche.

The top speed on the M3 conv is 155 vs 165 on the Porsche.

Also, if you buy a Porsche, in 20 years it is a member of the family and not just a old BMW.

To me , seems the Boxter is the way to go. Buy it, be happy, thrash it every weekend, and give it to someone in 20 years.

Ed.
now though, i'd get the '05 slk350 (well i am, but whatev) over the boxster-s.

boxster-s is $52k US base, slk350 will be ~45k US base
boxster-s is 258 hp, 229 torque 3.2L, slk350 is 268 hp, 258 torque 3.5L
boxster-s is 0-60 in 5.7 sec, slk350 is 0-60 in 5.4 sec
boxster-s is softtop, slk350 is electronic hardtop

we'll just have to see how well the slk will handle compared to the porsche, although i will bet it'll be a damn good handler, esp. from what i've read about it thus far - it's for sure far better than the z4.

I would pick that the slk350 over the boxster too based upon the design alone. I like the boxster design a lot but it's still an old design. the slk350 is a fresh new design.

porsche will need to re-design the boxster pretty soon to stay on top of the competitions.

Lexus is also an excellent marketing company... slogans don't make a car any more worthwhile.

Agreed, but most of us don't purchase vehicles to run on the track.

The M3 Coupe starts at closer to $45k-$48k, and both M3s offer more standard options.

Sure, but most of us do not keep our vehicles for 20 years.

I bring it up to support the argument that the C230 has good performance, which is worth mentioning since we're talking about which is the best overall car. Most people shopping for this type of car will consider acceleration as a mere factor and will not buy another car merely because it's faster -- unless the difference is very dramatic (like 0-60 in 6.0 versus 9.0). Since the C230 has good performance, that's not the case here. My view on that is if I want BTW acceleration, I'll just go out and get an '01-02 Camaro SS for about 1/2 the price and blow all of you into the dust.

I still think that when you add the good performance into the mix of other benefits (RWD, lower price, overall quality, steering feel, appearance), the C230 is the better deal. Of course, that's the great thing about the free market, people are free to disagree and buy what they wish.

hehe. I think the reason the C230 is cooler than the TL because there are more people driving the TL. If people started buying the C230 in dove and there were C230 all over roads, the C230 would not be cool anymore. Just my opinion.

Around here, there are 10 C230's for every Acura TL, IMO.

Price difference of over $8000 if you price a C320 with the same options which are standard on the Acura TL. I would rather have an Acura TL with $8000 cash in the glove compartment than a C320. In my opinion, the most common reason for purchasing the C230K over the Acura TL is the Mercedes Badge.

No, but which would will be more reliable? Which one will cost you more to repair and maintain?

For the price of a brand new Acura TSX, one can buy a 1994 E500 in mint condition and low mileage.... Of course, that is, one can even find one up for sale... LOL.. And I would definitely pick E500 over TSX, or TL for that matters....

Could you post the link to those "RAVE REVIEWS" ? I have the surround Harman/Kardon in mine and would like to read about it.

Well, i'd rather have a 2005 reliable Japanese car than a 1994 German car. While it may be the same price right now, over the next five years the eleven year old Benz will cost me a small fortune in repairs.

By my experience and observation, any 10 year old Japanese car is held together by dust and rust.

Unfortunately, you have had unusual and/or extreme experiences with Japanese vehicles. The average 1995 Camry or Accord is very reliable today, and will cost you a fraction of the cost of a 1995 500E in repairs. Also, we're talking about 2005 Japanese vs 1995 German here, not 1995 Japanese :P

i like mercedes-benz but, if i had to choose between a 10-year old mercedes-benz and a brand new japanese car, I would choose the brand new japanese car. My bmw is five years old and is still in pretty good shape but i don't like it anymore because it's a five year old car.

Depends do you want quality, or just a gussied up tin can POS FWD.

Look closely at the Acura.....if you can't tell the differences in design & build, then go for it. Drive it proudly.....with your BIC pen in shirt, and your Timex on your wrist.

I note that the 2004 C320 has twenty TSB's outstanding. The 2004 TL has eight. I think more properly, MB may have the quality but Acura/Honda has the reliability. Both fine automobiles IMO.

That extra $8000 could buy a pretty nice Rolex... not to mention the money saved due to the fact that the Acura TL is far more reliable, and that the parts are much cheaper to replace/repair upon conclusion of the warranty.
