Anyone have problems with their aftermarket COMANDs?

I had my US COMAND installed by Steve last year. So far I have not had any major problems but a few minor annoyances with my COMAND. These include:

1. 25% of the time when I start my car, the display of my COMAND does not work until I turn the comand on and off several times.

2. When I attach devices (ie. MP3 or DVD player) to the auxillary input of the COMAND, I have to turn the sound up 100% to get decent sound

Has anyone had the same problems? Any tips on how to fix the problem?

No, not those problems. Mine starts up 100% of the time although there has been a time or two where it wouldn't calculate a route and I had to eject and reload the CD and then it worked fine. I used AUX for a few weeks while I had XM radio and it worked fine at the same setting I used for the FM mod I used before. The only negative was that it resets the tone controls everytime you turn it off.

About once a week the screen won't light up, so I press the day/night button a couple of times and the screen comes on.

Screen never frozen, and now that I got my teplephone working I love the Euro Comand even more :p

Big Sis,
What will Steve do for us if the screen does stop completly?

I have the Euro Comand from MBenzNL that I bought second hand. So far it works perfectly. I did have problems earlier with a dirty cd but I got a replacement and it is now fine. I haven't used the auxillary inputs though.

Absolutely, someone to talk to me on my drive to/from work. The trick is to give it a different destination than the one you want and she'll be talking up a storm. Also looks pretty, fills in the center console with color. Just got the dealer to set it up so the instructions come up on the MFD.

Buell,
You are like me, I love to go the wrong way for a while and let Comand get be back on track. I know I am never lost.

Some of the maps require getting out reading glasses to see the fine print, don't worry about that now.

the marvelous thing about the comand is that it encourages you to experiment. for years, I only knew one way to get to work and back. Now I know about five different ways to get to work and back

It's funny. I found myself getting off one of those highway ramps going westbound and wanted to reverse directions going eastbound but they didn't have a corresponding ramp to get back on the highway. At first I was lost, then I remembered my Comand (only had it 1 wk so I'm excused a bit) and it just led me through some streets to get back on the correct highway ramp with no problem.

The only issue I have is right where I live there is only 2 main roads that are digitized (I have a 1/04 release date nav cd). My community has been around there for 30 yrs plus and to not have other streets listed was disappointing. (for me to get directions home, I basically drove to my driveway and made my current location a saved destination). Now when I get near it just says I'm in the destination area, doesn't give streets but just a general compass like indicator pointing my way there). I guess it's better than nothing.

That depends, I guess... but just email us in case you have a problem with your comand, CD drive, screen or whatever - and we will try to help you solve it.

Or... we may sell you another one. :v Just kidding!

The screen has always come up eventually, some times it took a minute and several tries. So without an actual failure there was no need to email.

So far been very happy with the Comand.

Screens not lighting up are due to the connection in between of the complete front of the comand and the tunerpart of the comand...something that can be easily taken care of with the help of a torx8.

Before we can even offer any kind of solution though, it might be usefull to send us an email...

Big Sis,
When will Steve trade in that old diesel and get a new 2005 E 320 CDI?

That would be a dream car after he puts all the AMG mods on it. 19 inch AMG E55 wheels, designio interior with DVD Comand, TPM, parktronic, distronic, TV in motion, Ventillated heated multifunction seats. And of course hop up the diesel another 50 HP and 100 ft lbs torque. Just enough to burn rubber would be fine.

That diesel is one fast motor and even faster with upgrades! For a larger car it is a great combination of luxury, power and grace. And the 37 mpg isn't bad either.

Can't find that in any c class.

greetingz,

Hi Steve, my US Comand was installed by you last year. Do you know where I get the torx8? The screen problem with my Comand is occurring more frequently now. I am concerned the whole display might go out completely. Do you know how to fix it?

Can you give me your email address? Thanks!

I looked for a torx 8 today too, had the Comand out looking at other things. That size 8 is really small, the smallest any set I could find was a size 10, way to big Looks like they make these sizes for cell phones and laptop computers. With that small a driver you want a quality made tool

So I did the old Google search,
Wiha and Lara Speciality tools look good.

I was finishing up my cell phone install, needed 3 size 4 M (small) nuts to attach the compensator to the coupe bracket. Had to go to 5 places before finally finding the right nuts. Home Depot came through. Finally able to get the trunk back together.

SURE I do...and as for the email address...don't tell me you don't know how to find that on a forum like this...but anyways: Steve@MBenzNL.com

WiHa was the suplier of our (load) of torx 8s...so much better then the ones from the Frys sets...
