Unhappy Malfunction Message: BRAKE LINING WEAR

I have a Malfunction message that just came up yesterday while I was driving.
The message says "BRAKE LINING WEAR Visit Workshop"

Has anyone had this problem with their car?
How serious is this problem??
Can I still drive the car for the next several days because it's Christmas time and the dealerships are all closed until next Tuesday (Dec 28)?
Is the repair covered under warranty or is this deemed a 'wear & tear' item and I must pay for the repair?
My car is 3 years old now (possesion date was Dec.9,2001) with 58,000Kms or 36,000 miles on the odometer.

Thanks in advance for any help...

and have a Safe and Merry Christmas....

I think it is just your brake pad wear sensor is sending a signal that your front pads need replacement. I changed the front pads on my '02 C240 myself in my humble garage. Don't spend big bux on this simple job. Unless they've changed the design since '02, MB's jacking tool is GREAT! It is light weight and jacks up the car in seconds. I'll probably pick up a second one so I can jack up the front of the car quickly and easily for brake pad replacement and tire rotation.

Dont' forget, you still have the rear emergency brakes when the fronts fail. When that sensor goes off, you have about 1/16" left of pad, not too comforting. Try not to use the brakes much, downshift to slow the car down. And if you have to crash into something, just remember, hit it straight on so the airbags will deploy. Also make sure your seatbelt is tight.

Are you talking about the jack that comes with the car?

Yes. It looks wierd, but just slide it into the slot under the car and start spinning the handle. Car will be off the ground in just a few seconds.

Misinformation verboten.

Actually the sensor light doesn't differentiate between front and rear. :p

I had this message on my car and drove for almost 1000 miles before i changed the pads. Also, i was told that as long as the message stays orange in the display you are okay, if it turns red then you need to do something about it asap.

Well i had a look at my break pads and the back were half way done. so i changed them. There is still 3/4 pads left on the front breaks but that the malfunctioning warning still comes up. Why do you think is that?

make sure the sensors are plugged in, and clean area with maf cleaner also. may be the wire is broke on the sensor, they are cheap, also pull the sensor, and see if an old sensor wasnt reused. good luck.

Personally I just tied my sensor out of the way, and inspect every few months. IMO the sensor goes WAY too early. On my factory set I easily had 5+ mm lining when the sensor tripped. Now I go all the way down to 1-2mm before replacement. Saved quite a bit of money this way.
