Exclamation New 2005 C230 Sports Sedan Comments / Small Issue?!

Well I have had my new car now for about 3 weeks..and I love everything about it...I just hit 1,000 miles 2 days ago so I put the car on "sport" mode and I finally just started really driving it..the car to me is quick enough though I would love a couple of more horses, the build quality is awesome and I love the handling...I still haven't decided if I should tint my windows and I am really impressed with the smooth ride.

The only issue I have on-going is that every now and then I hear a little ticking noise coming from the steering wheel area when i go over 40-50 mph. The noise is very low and nobody else in the car can really hear it besides the driver.. It doesn't sound like a rattle, it is more of a ticking noise where it sounds like something is about to short out. The sound seems like it is coming from behind the instrument cluster above the steering wheel. Has anybody experienced this before?

When I take it in for the 1,000 - 3,000 mile checkup I will have them take a look at this..thanks in advance for the feedback.

Just got mine a week ago. How did you break it in? Dealership told me to drive the crap out of it, and don't stay at a steady speed for too long.

As for your problem, I haven't experienced anything like it; but I would be sure to mention it to the dealer when you go in for the checkup.

BTW, the only thing that is bothering me is the amber side marker. Does anyone know where to get a crystal-clear or smoked one?

Break in...

I broke in my car while on the "C" mode and I tried my best to not go over 4000 RPM...I drove it very easy the first 800 miles or so then from 800 to 1000 miles I started getting on it little by little. Now I have put the car on the "Sport" mode and wow what a difference..

Clear side markers are very popular....check e-bay or performanceproducts.com

I will be sure to mention the ticking noise to my dealer when I go...

Congrats on the new ride!! I'd like to know what "sport" mode you are talking about though. According to the manual and the MB website, the settings are "comfort" and "standard". "Comfort" mode puts the car in second gear for better starts in slippery conditions.

Also, definetly gripe to the dealer, and don't get blown off. They like to ignore those kinds of complaints.

You are correct...

You are correct...I meant "standard" mode...sorry about that.
I feel the car does drive much better in the standard mode than in the comfort mode, I only put it back to comfort mode when it is raining. Thanks for the feedback...

Who cares what MB calls it, I like calling it Cold & Summer

If you haven't opened her up past 4000 then you're in for a treat.

I can't stop turning the radio off and opening the window... these coupes sound so nice from the factory. Little growl followed by an even better whistling growl

Boy do the factory break pads suck though... I mean they stop very well, but my front rims are black in no time.

This must be your first European car. They all have dusty brake pads.

Rims - Cleaning

That is true...My wheels do get dirty pretty fast but with a quick wipe of a clean rag they are shining again in no time...The rims are cleaning friendly -
I love the brilliant silver color, it is so easy to clean. I am a clean freak, take a clean rag to my car at least once a day..Keeping it in the garage helps a lot but no matter how clean it is I will always find something to touch up.

Yep, your dealer is right to a certain extent. Definitely don't keep it at one speed for a long time. Vary your speeds and RPM's. The seals need to seat well or else in the future you may have oil leaks, poor gas mileage, etc. There's acutally a very good write up somewhere (i don't recall at the moment) on how to properly break in your engine in less than a day. And it has worked.

These car's are meant to be driven, so drive it Vary your speeds, punch the throttle once in a while, drive it as if it was broken in. If you baby it from the beginning, it won't be good in the future (of course unless it's a lease than forget it :p)

I agree.

It doesn't help that many Jeep rims are clearcoated either. The clearcoat NEVER stays intact, and you get the white spiders in no time. Miss the V8, not the wheels!

having a manual definitely helps alittle with the brake dust since you use your brakes alittle less than with an auto. takes me forever to clean the rims on my bimmer. at least the C will have smooth, easy five stars. shouldn't be too bad once i get her. i'd have to say the worst that i've ever seen however was my dad's Audi A6. rims where a PITA to clean and were nasty within days.

Rattle

About your rattleing noise... I've had my 05 since june and have 17K and noticed a noise kind of like what you describe only mine only happens when its realy cold like 0 degrees. Mine sounds like its coming from the base of the windshield behind the dash. Other than that its been really good.
-Congrats on the car!

Exactly!!! Ever since the day I got my Jeep those damn white spiders pissed me off! And every place that said they can fix them also said I would loose the gold on the inside of the spokes, so I just left the spiders! I miss the V8 too, 318 V8, tried and true from the 60's to 2003! That is a great motor, bulletproof too, great torque, HORRIBLE GAS MILEAGE!!!

blkc230k - I don't know about you but I am very eager to get after it, and I am sure you can't wait to hear that little whining noise from the engine once you get on it...love the way this car sounds.

Some people say drive it hard during the first 1,000 miles or so, then some people say drive it nice and soft for the first 1,000 miles or so...either way I went with what the owners manual said - which is to leave it on "C" mode for the first 1,000 miles and drive the car soft then gradually get into it.

One thing I do have to say though, I kind of miss having my limo tint...yes it was a pain driving at night but I had my privacy plus the windows seemed to stay so much cleaner...my windows now without tint get dirty just from somebody looking at the car...very frustrating.
