I'm trying to copy mp3 songs to the hard drive. Does anyone know what kind of memory card it reads? I think it use PCMCIA memory card, but I'm not sure. Can someone confirm it??

You can copy to the hard drive from Cd. I have not tried yet from memory card. I will tomorrow.

The reason MB chose PCMCIA is you can get a PCMCIA card reader and use any memory card that works in that reader. You can get a 6 in 1 reader for instance.

They should've offered something PEOPLE use and wasn't a out dated.

They should've perhaps picked USB, already offered a card reader, or picked expresscard if they at all were going to do something like that.

If they did Expresscard, they could've done some fancy trick things, perhaps being able to hook up a eSATA drive and being able to upload new maps or things like that.

But that would make sense, so Mercedes will never do it.

When you insert a cd and go to listen at the bottom of the screen you will now see "REC" you can choose to do whole cd or tracks you select.

I have seen several other people say "USB" that would not be possible.
with so many devices . . thumb drives, eSATA it would require a "Driver" to be installed upon insersion, and of course a operating system.

PCMCIA = So many options
PCMCIA Card reader - MM cards, SD Cards, Compact Flash and quite a few others

There are a couple of cars out there now that have USB interfaces for music. It can't be that hard for MB to throw in a USB port and just transfer music that way, especially if other car makers can do it.

To an extent everything has an OS, but not in the sense of Mac OS X or Windows XP. It could be something a lot more simple, along the terms of an embedded linux device.

I figure, if you're dropping 30k$ on a car, what's another 500$ to be able to hook up things through USB

If you are "on-line" when "ripping", your computer should be able to retrieve the full track-info from the Internet, and ensure that saved tracks are usefully named. This certainly works with RealPlayer, iTunes and Microsoft Media Player.

I don't know why..I notice that it can only rip wma not mp3 files..Oh Well..I guess thats good enough cause i have a 2g card, that's like more then 400 songs.

you have to remember this decision was made like 5 years ago when there was still a question about the long-term future for USB....remember when everybody thought firewire etc. would mean USB was obsolete.

at the time, PCMCIA was still considered a stable technology.

Multimedia?

Doesn't the owners manual explain all this? And more importantly, you have a 204 with Multimedia? When was it delivered? Mine is still a month away and I was told I had one of the first available. Perhaps in the Los Angeles zone.

If you purchase a PCMCIA adapter that supports Type III Compact Flash cards, then you should be able to purchase a Compact Flash hard drive. Type III is a bit larger than the Type II PCMCIA, anyone try this yet?
