There is no import tax in Hong Kong. There is an on the road tax that is almost equal to the price of the car. There are some exemptions. The tax is serving two purposes. It supplies needed government services for motorists, and it serves to limit the number of cars buzzing around.

If you would like to see really high car taxes, look at Singapore.

MY13 C63 P30, K&N filters, V6 tune, secondary cats deleted.
In Australia I had to pay $81000 for a C 200K Avantgarde with Command & Vision Pack, that's around US$72800, Not cheap. If a C350 Sports was available in Aus it would be well over US$100,000 and for that sort of money you can pick up a Base SLK 350.

2004 S55 AMG
Wow!

And I'm pissed because in addition to the 7% sales tax that we pay at time of purchase I get whacked with a yearly property tax, based on the current book value, which is around 4%...

I was looking on the MBHK web-site a while ago as well... the FRT is what really hurts. And also, a lot of equipment that we get here in Canada as standard are optional in HK. It's all back to a previous discussion about places where vehicles are more of a status symbol and people would get a stripped down vehicle as long as it carried the three-pointed star.

When did you order your car? And from which dealership?

Compare to New York or Bay Area..... Singapore or Hong Kong is not much difference. Btw, the average salary there definitely is not as high as here..

Agreed that average salary is not comparable between HKG and NYC. Since university grads are offered positions in the HKD$8000 per month range. In North American, people would cry fowl and the poverty advocates would have the boss' hung. However, for those who are buying the Mercedes, the monthly income is certainly higher there. The spread between the "Haves" and the "Have-Nots" is much wider in Hong Kong. IMHO.

^ It's true. In HKG many people have $$$ items (they used to have the most Ferraris per capita in the world if I remember correctly ), but if you have a low income, you can easily buy lunch on the street for less than $1.50USD. A lot of my friends were :O when I told them $1.50 would get me a Coke in a restaurant.

$100k USD is cheap compared to what it would cost in Denmark with the 200% car tax. Probably why DK was sued by the EU for implementing a tariff.

paid $80K USD for C180K here in holland. C350 or 300 would be around 100K USD or more i think.

I think the attitude around automobile ownership in North Amercian is very different than other parts of the world. Due to non-optimal transit services and urban design, owning a vehicle here is more of a necessity than a luxury. Unfortunately, this also breeds a culture of entitlement.
