W204 Front License Plate - Got a Ticket!!
Okay - I live in a state where the front license plate is mandatory (Minnesota). I know it is not ideal so I have left it in the trunk thinking that I can get away with it. Well, unfortunately after 1 month I already received a $95 ticket on my window yesterday while I was shopping.
My question: Has anyone ever come up with a clever way of installing the front license plate without covering up the nice front bumper or where I dont have to drive screws into the bumper? I am thinking of double stick tape but scared that will just fall off after time.
(jealous of those states that dont have to install these
Thanks all.

What I find to be the greatest injustice is that no state will make international/European standard size plates, especially when they require you to mount them. In Europe, anyone can order plates in EU or US size to fit their car/taste.
I doubt people would be as opposed to mounting plates that fit, rather than some stupid looking box.

Since we're on the subject. I'm using a Brabus bodykit. and they sure didnt design the front bumper to go along with a license plate. I had to take it off and got into the same trouble u did.

I haven't seen this for myself, but it looks like a clever design. At least you dont have to drill holes thru the front of your bumper...only on the bottom, where nobody will notice it.

This is the one I'm considering using. I'm in MN too and got a ticket years ago for the same thing...

i have used double sided tape on my mothers old slk. the licenced plate was still on there after 3 years when we sold it. it overstood a lot of rain, carwash, snow and hot weather in the summer.

I can imagine your plate will get clipped or bent as the mount is so far out from the car (looking at the E46 top view).
And I like this write-up:
A low cost, low profile alternative to bulky, stock OEM brackets, this bracket does not require any holes be drilled into the front face of your bumper. It leaves virtually no trace if you plan to remove your plate at a later date. It also requires no expensive painting to match your car's color.
(Two small, 1/8" holes are required on the lower surface of the bumper. These holes are virtually invisible should you remove the bracket in the future.)
You're still drilling holes into the bumper... doesn't matter if it's front or bottom, or top or side... or whereever.

If this isn't to your liking, you can also use some clear silicone sealer on the back of your license plate. It sticks well, but can be peeled off later. This works even better if you have a clear front-end protector. Use blue painter's masking tape to secure the plate overnight, while the silicone cures.
Fortunately, I live in a state that requires no front plate. Very nice for car enthusiasts.

I didn't see your quote any where on that page? According to the CAD drawing there are no holes to drill...

that quote he got was for the SKENE Design model, which does require holes to be drilled. the gominigo model uses the existing tow hook to mount the brackets which do not require drilling except your license plate will be off to the side instead of the middle of your bumper. i personally think the Skene Design looks best if you place it on the lowest setting so its covering the lower grill.

Save yourself time and money and just screw the license plate bracket that came with it on there. It doesn't look that bad, plus it saves you money from tickets. If your going to use double sided tape or velcro, when you go to remove it, the tape or velcro is just going to take paint with it resulting in you having to repaint the bumper. If you use some other contraption, theres a chance it will rub up and down on the bumper and result in you repainting the bumper lol.

Front plate? Bah!
I have decided to thumb my nose at the front plate requirement and carry it in the trunk, on the mounting bracket, bent to shape with a black metal frame. it's been going on three months now with no trouble and if I should be stopped, I will make some excuse about waiting for a back-ordered part. Or something.

Researching the two different website options, I actually like to installation off to the sdie but surely do want it to be a clean look when done and close to the bumper.
FYI - I do have the clear bra on the front (which was a good point).
Also, painting the bumper if there happens to be damage doesnt bother me as much as having unfixable holes drilled in.

Anyone try the skene yet?

My solution...
Im in NY the only time I get bothered is when i park espically in the city, and once in a while going trough the whitestone or throgs neck bridge easypass. but what i do when i park is just stick the plate on the lower grill with two black clips (xmas tree clips is there nick name) and it works like a charm... the go right into the holes in the grill with a slight bend to the plate, any auto parts should have them. as for the tolls I tell them its a new car and dont have the bracket.... (works on my Benz Audi and Bimmer)

i think if you cut into the plastic grill, you would have enough clearence to fit the brackets. installing the brackets at this point, would require you to remove the bumper and work from the inside of the bumper to get the screws in. i dont think it would be too noticable if you ever decide to remove the license plate bracket. there would only be two little entrance cuts in the grill.

Go to http://www.altecproducts.com/index.htm and look at the "Show N Go" License Plate Frame.
I have been a customer of theirs for years & just bought one (waiting for my GL320 to arrive).

is it legal to have it on the visor? i had my license on my front windshield and still got pulled over. the officer said it had to be mounted on the outside of the car.
