Maintenence Questions

This coming from a prospective buyer, I'm being told by the BMW dealer that I would be better off getting a BMW because Mercedes charges $250-300 for an oil change..is this true? I would rather get dirty and do it myself for that..but BMW's full maintenence package is pretty darn nice.

Also, is maintenence really expensive on the Mercedes or does it just seem that way?

150 bucks avg for oil change...

and you think you are getting bmw maintainence for free??? why do you think the car with similar specs cost a few grand more??? cus they build in their "free" maintainence into the price!

Buying a new car your factory warranty is pretty comprehensive for a 4 yr 50k mile. MB does not cover particular things such as wiper blades but generally speaking the factory warranty is a solid one. However, after the warranty period you could be shelling out major $ if you don't extend your warranty. As far as $300 for an oil change... come on?? Sounds to me like somebody really wants to sell a bimmer.... my 2 cents

Haha right on bro.

What are "average" oil change prices people are paying? I trade every 3 years so warranty isn't an issue for me.

an oil change itself should be between $100 to $150 using a genuine MB fleece filter and Mobil1 synthetic oil. Did the BMW guy tell you that you only need one oil change a year or 13.5K miles? probably not.

Service A and Service B are higher. You can skip Service A the first year with just an oil change. Service A and Service B both include oil changes.

My dealer quoted $100 for their oil changes. It's actually not that much more than a quick oil change place once you factor in the cost of Mobil 1.

I'm sure when I bring my car in for it's first oil change, it'll be $150....

Once a year for an oil change doesn't that seem rather long even with synthetic?

nope. there have been both independant tests and members of this forum that have analysed thier oil after 1yr/13.5k intervals and the oil was still providing adequate protection.

None yet - just wishing
the local dealer here quoted $110. which isn't bad, since the chevy dealer charges 75 for the corvette. At least at the MB dealership I get a nice place to sit and a plasma screen to watch, and free wireless internet.

I heard the same horror stories about the price of oil changes, while 75 or 110 is far away from the $19.95 Walmart special, considering the price of Mobil 1 its really not too bad.

you could always do it yourself to save some money.

I would not trust Wal-Mart to change my oil with a Mercedes after all the crap they did to my other cars, no thanks!

I do miss my BMW service plan, but thats all I miss about my BMW ha ha. Do be aware though, I'm sure someone can post the exact number amounts, but the A service on my ML set me back $270 and if I can remember right, my C service was $498. Thats probably a lil higher than what a C would be, but you get the idea, its not cheap by any means. By the way a little tid bit about the BMW service, it covers wipers and brakes and normal wear items...but only if you tell them, I always had to tell the service department what I wanted or they would never replace them. As one service advisor told me, they only replace certain things at the request of the customer to save money.

The BMW maintenence plan is great. As for it being built into the cost of the car, yes it is. But, if you've looked at lease rates lately, it's cheaper to lease an optioned 335i than it is a C300. That along with never having to pay for wiper blades, oil changes, brake pads or clutches is pretty convincing.

In reality, you'll get at most 3 regularly scheduled oil changes out of them (15k service interval) if you buy and 2 if you lease, unlikely that you'll need new brake pads in 50k (I never did, but maybe I'm too easy on my brakes) but all the wiper blades and wiper fluid you can eat. I went through about 4 sets in 28k miles and the service advisor was close to cutting me off.

Clutches are listed in the plan, but I'd bet they'd argue with you on that one unless it went within the first year/12k miles.

Yes we prefer MB, but you can't deny that the free service from BMW is a great idea. We lease a BMW here at our office and it is a comfort to know that all services are included. The dealership treats us great. No complaint here.

Yes I am aware, nothing is for free and somehow these expenses are included in the purchase price and yet I don't believe that the money allowed, is anyway near, what the dealership charges a regular customer.

There can't be any doubt, the free service is a big item in any cost analysis and it is a big plus for BMW. If it is no big deal, then MB, include it too and we have a level playing field.

MB did include it although it didn't include the wear and tear items (maybe if your dealer was kind enough). They dropped the plan MY05.

True, my first two Benz's had the maintenance included, but when I bought my 06 they dropped it. Funny note is that when I told them BMW did it the Benz dealer told me "oh BMW will stop doing it next year too", its 2008 three years after I bought my 06 ML in 05 and BMW still has free maintenance, and so does Lincoln and in my area there are a few dealerships offering it on Toyotas and Scions and Dodge's to name a few.

So some of you only have an oil change done at year 1 instead of service A?

Anyone know, if you lease, would you get in trouble, for only having oil change done instead of service A?

Also, would they reset the service computer, if you only did an oil change with them?

Service A is little more than an oil change, the rest is mostly checking to see if there is anything needing attention, for which you pay more.

My C uses 8 to 9 quarts per change. With the inspections of service A, it is only $ 200. Doing the oil myself is just over $ 100.

May be I am lucky since my dealer gives me free service A and B for the first 4 years or 50K miles for my C. Did not get a killer deal off MSRP however and it was only $1700 off (not like others $2000+ off).

Still quite happy with the overall deal IF I DON'T MOVE OUT THE AREA before the 4 years.
