Fog lights cracked twice in two weeks, help please.

Hi,

I have just recently purchased C300, and about two weeks ago, I noticed my passenger fog light was broken (missing a piece at the center, too). I had it repaired at $270 for the labor and parts, and two weeks later, which is today, the same light has a huge crack basically running in a circle.

I honestly do not want to fork out another $270 to get this fixed again. Is there a way that I can just change the lense only?

And adding to that, two weeks ago, when the fog light were being repaired, I got the sunroof 'relearned'. And again today, same problem. This is really frustrating.

Any helpful suggestions? I honestly never have any of these problems with my previous ones before. Should I contact the same service adviser and explain the problem and see what else can be done instead of installing the entire unit again?

Thanks,
Noel.

That's sad. Twice in 2 weeks.

Where do you live (part of the country/world)? What kinds of roads do you drive on where you're getting this fog light hit?

I'm thinking maybe you need a shield in front.

But wait. Didn't someone say that those lenses were Lexan? Why are they breaking?

Don't, please don't, tell me that MB built those fog lights out of the same cheap plastic they made the mesh grill from. Please don't.

you might have to invest in some clear shields for your lenses.

"relearned?"

It is sad. I was doing research about this 'fog light' thing, and on another forum, someone says he got the lenses fixed . I don't know. Oh, and I live in the city. I'm thinking I'm getting hit by rocks while on the highway? If only I'm this lucky with the lottery.

What are these protective shields? Can I get it at the the MB bodyshop and have them install it, too?

As for the sunroof, it says 'relearned' on the invoice. LOL. Don't know either, but my sunroof would not glide back smoothly. It slides back, stops, slides, stops. At one point, it didn't close at all. It just stuck there, and after an hour like that, I managed to close it up, which took almost five minutes to accomplish.

But can you help me with some more information on these shields, as in where to get it and how to put it on? No matter what, I'll have to fix it and I'd really like to protect it this time. This is poking a whole through my wallet. Haha.

Thank you very much.
Noel

Re-learning

I had a Volvo with a sunroof that wouldn't close properly. Evidently instead of using purely mechanical stops, they are adjusting a timing mechanism that runs the motor in one direction for a specified period of time. Many sunroofs have multiple stops and it gets complicated (well, okay, for a sliding skin/glass it's compilicated). Resetting the 'learned' behaviour is what they had to do.

reprogramming the sunroof and windows

Any of the places that install clear stone protection film also install the same material over the headlights and fog lights to prevent breakage. I have done it on MY C300.

Some people are too cheap to do this and end up paying for it in paint and lens repair costs.

As to reprogramming the sunroof, it's the same procedure as reprogramming the windows. It is explained in the owners manual. If any dealer charged you for this (should be free), you should stop giving them your business.

Next time your sunroof gets stuck, just use the handy dandy p.o.s. looking tool they give you to close it manually, its usually in the glove box.

Also, if its the same fog light that keeps busting sounds a little fishy. Make sure they replaced the whole fog light housing and not just the lense, could be that the housing is messed up causing the lenses to crack.

While you're at it, the same could be said for the paint job.

I've got more chips in the white paint in 6 months than my Buick had in 6 years. Sounds like planned obsolesence.

My fog light on the drivers side was smashed up. I got the light from germany, and did the repair my self. Its been a good 2 weeks, and this one isnt broken. My fog light was working i think, but the glass(or plasitc) what ever it is, smashed. Maybe some one did it, or a rock did it i dunno.

After reading this, the first thought that came to mind was... someone's hatin' on your ride bro.

Sounds too coincidental for the same foglight to break from just driving on the road... If it happens a third time, you should definitely play the lottery.

But then again... it could be a magical pebble.

Sounds like it.

Heard stories from coworkers who's cars were vandalized. Parked.. walked into a store... 5mins later... walked out to their car with a broken side mirror...

Hi all,

Thank you all for your replies. I brought my car in the other day, and it seemed it was caused by a rock. It hasn't fallen apart yet, but it will soon. It is going in for repair this Thursday, so that's another $270 on the same light. But I also found a local place that do these protective films everyone has been suggesting, so that's the first thing I'm going to do after it's fixed up.

Saks_C350_Sport: Yea, mines fogged up too. Not much, but it would early morning or after a shower. Like I say, how I wish I can be this lucky with the lottery. Out of all places, the rocks just like aiming right at that little circle len.

THANKS everyone for your suggestions. It is really, really helpful. Never knew about these protective films stuff before.

I also had the fog light broken by a rock on my W204 (with less than 2k miles), but the bulb remained intact. I took it to the dealer, and they told me that MB does not sell the lense cover by itself, and must replace the entire fog light assembly. Quoted me $300 for part/installation.

X3 and 2012 C coming soon
Get the clear fog and headlight protection. Especially the foglight protection. There was some on ebay for $10.00. If you can't find any, just search paint protection and buy the raw material and make your own.

Maybe this will work:

That's what I got. And the headlight pieces are cut correctly. X-pel is definitely the leader in clear protection. Theya have even developed their own clear paint protection because of complaints of 3M's product having too much orange peel.
