How does an x-pipe alter the exhaust flow (if it does at all), and what kinda changes in the car could I expect if I were to install one? Is is just for sound, for performance, or both? If performance, how much? Thanks.

Make sure you tell the shop doing the work to be careful and save the resonator as it can easily be put back on by reversing the above procedure.
Only downside is if you don't like the sound.
Make sure you ask for X-pipes and not just straight pipes as they are louder.
An X-pipe equalizes and lowers back pressure between the two sides of the exhaust system. A good X-pipe forces the gases to merge and cross over even at higher RPM. This is what gives a true X-pipe design their charateristic sound. An x-pipe causes no gains in performance as our resonator is not restrictive at all, inside it just has 2 extra chambers.

narky: little performance gain + better sounds
down side is its bad for the environment and u might get a dirty bumper faster
plus it might worsen the fuel consumption as your ecu is not tuned to suit but thats being said a freer flow exhaust might give u a better mpg on the highway too
cmon guys, think of the mother earth

nbturbos has mentioned in numerous posts about his modification that he can't see a performance difference as the exhaust is not chocked in any way by the resonator. It's a sound difference only.
IMO the intake and exhaust's(minus headers maybe) are pretty free flowing(plenty of volume and clean flow paths) on these cars so I wouldn't expect much if any power increases to concern oneself with. I am just speculating off past experience and could be wrong though.

To remount the resonator if you even have issues will be cheaper yet as it's just labor.

Zankok, none of what you said is true. Resonator has nothing to do with emissions. Mother Earth will be fine. The ECU does not need to be re-tuned so MPG will remain the same and you won't lose any power, just as you won't gain any.
Again it's a very simple job that doesn't need over-thinking. If you get a bad install then you just had bad luck as any intermediate installer/welder can do the job with ease.

I mistaken the resonator for catalyst converter
my bad
that gives me another reason for modifying it now *giggles*
