I sure hope not reporting it doesn't come back to haunt you.
I can see a situation where they refuse to pay $700 to repair it because they think it should cost $50.

We've got mobile repair guys around here than can airbrush spot repairs and you can't even tell. Shouldn't require a removal and total repaint of the bumper.
Or another option....
Member Buellwinkle repaired his w203 bumper a couple of years ago with a spray paint kit. It came out flawless. I was there to help him. It was a multi-part kit with special primer, base coat and clear coat. Color matched perfectly. His bumper still looks like new today.

how about that spray kit thingy that wblynch talking about?
I wouldn't with a black or dark colored car. But wblynch has experience so clarify with him.
Hopefully just color sanding? If you really want it done right paint the whole bumper… but looking at the damage it didn’t appear to be that bad (not downplaying). Looks like you lucked out…. As far as accidents go….
I wish I had taken a picture of the lady picking up her Brand New ‘E’ class at the dealer when before she could leave a delivery truck backed into her door!

no i dont need to go to the dealer...
Just received my 2nd estimate and it was a different in price i was looking at $575 with the same procedure as the first estimate. Its like a $400 savings, but it is a actually the quality of the job not the price. i do not want the bumper to fade in like 5 years.

You own the
car.Correct?Go to the body shop of your choosing, stop running around for estimates. You give them the bill, get the check and have the work done.If they refuse you turn it over to the police and their insurance.
In 5 years your car will be worth a lot less than you think anyway, heck it is worth a lot less than what you would think right now on the open market,so there is no need to worry about a carfax report if insurance does the work. You tell the buyer and they are still going to offer you market price for the car at the time of sale.Look at the 70grand early century AMG E55's going for mid 16's.I don't know why you are trying so hard to save them money, when it was you who was inconvienced.

In 6 or 7 years, we're not going to get squat for these cars anyway. That's the auto business. Or am I overstating the reality?

I experienced almost exactly same bad luck. The estimate was $780 at Wagon Work in VA (Actually, Wagon Work is the best for painting but they are a little bit more expensive than other body shops in D.C. metro area.) I repaired it there. Pretty satisfied.
They seem to have repainted the whole bumper. You might expect the estimate close to $700.
The scratch appeared to cost not that much though. The reality was so different.

MY fiance got rear ended in her C300 last week. She called the cops. She only has a few scratches on the rear bumper and the black diffuser piece is bowed out a bit. Insurance adjuster came out and gave an estimate of around $800. So this is gonna show up on a carfax report now? Thats lame.

if you go through insurance, yea it will be reported and it will have a carfax report.
