Did our cars come with 5W-40 motor oil?
Today I was at the dealer buying other things, so I asked the Parts Department guy for a quart of motor oil too (I always try to keep an extra quart of oil in the garage, just in case the car burns a little oil during the break-in period seating the cylinder rings.)
The Parts Department guy gave me a 'Mobile1 Emission System Protection (ESP) Formula M 5W-40 Fully Synthetic' motor oil. I remember my old 2006 W203 C230 used 0W-40 so I asked the guy if Mercedes changed the oil weight in my 2009 W204 C350?
He said yes, Mercedes switched to 5W-40 oil (at least in California here?), and he mentioned that my 2009 C350 was probably filled with 5W-40 from the factory.
Can anyone please help confirm if Mercedes really did switch to 5W-40 in our W204? Many thanks.
With best regards,
- Alex.

I too thought our cars use 0W-40, thus I was in doubt when the Parts Department guy told me to use the ESP Formula M 5W-40.
Interesting is that he was so sure about the 5W-40. I double-checked with him about the 5W-40, and he said yes it is the right oil for my 2009 C350...

MB does not specify weights, only oils that meet their standards. Even so, they reccomend -40 weight oils for cars being driven where temperatures can go over ~85F.
Even though some 0w-30 oils are approved, M1 0w-30 is not. Personally, would stick with -40 weights according to the charts.
