Cleaning brake dust off of wheels...

Does anyone have an easy way to clean the brake dust out of the painted 17" wheels on the C300 sport? I have caked brake dust in the rear wheels that I can't seem to scrub out and it looks horrible. A friend suggested oven cleaner but it didn't seem to work too well.

Thanks for your time!

+1 ... used it cleaner off the brake dust from the brembos on my STI...
for the merc, i've been using meguairs hot rims all wheel cleaner

also for preventative care, you can also look into some wheel wax. makes in between cleaning much easier!

P21S is the preferred product and it's made in Germany which should make it cheaper than here in the US.

Oven cleaner?? I'm surprised the paint didn't come off.

Thanks everyone for your help...

+1 getting some rim polish on there or it will drive you mad. Get some Porterfield or similar ceramic pads onto the car soonest. The standard pads will drive you quite mad.

P21S Gel formula. Love it so much that I buy it by the 5 litre containers.

How much are you paying and from where? I get my 5-liter refills of the regular flavor from someplace on the east coast and paid about $86 or so last fall. I get about 10 months out of five liters.

The Gel formula is only a few bucks more, and clings to the vertical surfaces better (i.e. negligible running).

I source it through AutoBarn. Bloody expensive, but reasonable if you buy it in the 5 litre size (~$90). Plus they have free shipping offers from time to time(can't beat free shipping on an 11lb item).

I've also heard that the wheel cleaners from Griot's works just as well but is less expensive. I haven't tried it out though, so YMMV.

Have been using All Wheel from Meguiars and it does great job, but noticed it has acid in it and has bleached cement driveway in spots. Not sure it would be good for wheels over a period of time. Switched to the wheel cleaner from Griot's. Works ok ,but still a lot of work even with wheel brush .
Clean wheels are worth the extra effort though.

+1 I use the gel for weekly cleanings with the 18" C63 5 spokes, and it works great. I apply wheel wax (usually pinnacle) every other week which greatly reduces the amount of brake dust that sticks to the wheel. With the wheel wax, I can drive the car for 3-4 days and then take a dry microfiber towel without any solvent and wipe all of the surface brake dust off pretty easily.

I use 303 Aerospace protectant for the dash/vinyl (MT Tex); I like it because it doesn't leave the "shiny" look that other protectants do, I prefer the matte look.

I use Pinnacle rubber/vinyl cleaner for the dash/interior (MB Tex) before I apply the 303. It's got a neutral PH balance, so it won't do any damage.

Saw the gel version some time ago but still have liquid version left. About to get some more. How is the gel version applied? Is it spray on but thicker? Not sure about you guys but still need to apply elbow grease after using this stuff but I guess it depends on how often one uses it.

ArmorAll is useless - water based, still manages to be greasy, and goes away quickly. A complete waste of time and money.

303 Protectant works well on tires, as well as the dash, etc.

Wheel cleaners have been covered well in the previous posts....

Don't use Armorall anywhere inside, ever. That's so 1965.

That’s one thing I like about the C63 wheels you can’t really notice the brake dust on the wheels.

Sprayed on like the regular version. The gel version sticks on better and doesn't run down like the regular stuff. Leave it on for between 5min to 2 hours then spray it off. Done.
