If you look at your roof you will see 2 rectangles on each side of the car. If you lift gently you will see the mounting system for the factory racks. They are designed not to make contact with the paint. It's a great system.

The rack is very practical when in use, when not in use take it off but if you like it, that’s all you should care.

I've been thinking about getting the roof system to take bikes on my car so it's great to see a posting (with pics) for this. How hard is it for one person to mount the rack on the car?

I believe my factory rack was approx $350.. it is made by thule actually & i like it much better than my actual Thule rack for my BMW beause it comes with little wrenches on the bolts so that it is actually tool less. On the Thule rack I had on my BMW, i had to get their special tool out to take the rack off each time.

Thanks folks, the roof bike rack looks good. I like the factory roof mount that doesn't touch the paint.

Can anyone recommend where can I find the rack online, or should I go to my dealer to order it?

Thanks,

It is an awesome system. I had my dealer throw them in as part of the deal. I use mine for snowboards. The car even looks kind of cool with them on. But I don't leave them on because it takes 5 mins to put them on.

Also, the MB racks are much more streamline and (imo) better looking then the ones pictured above.

X3 and 2012 C coming soon
I almost bought one a few weeks ago. I decided to keep using my Volvo with a Volvo/Tule load bars and Yakima trays for bike hauling. The C system looks really nice, but I'm afraid I might drop my bikes or something or do something stupid and scuff the C.

If not, and I get a chance, I'll throw them on and post some pics.

They work really well

We took the bikes out this weekend and they were fine on the car. The rack system basically comes in two stages. The first part is the mounts to the car and the cross bars. The second part is the components to mount whatever you are using, (kayak, bikes, boards/skis) to the cross bars.

The mounts attach to the car by using a two ended threaded shaft. One side screws down into the slots on the roof of the car and the other end sticks up a coupe inches and the rack "feet" slide down onto the threaded end and then attaches using a nut and washer.

I ended up spending a little over $600 for the whole thing.

I was thinking the same thing too .....but then again I also carry a 50+lbs Downhill bike that I ride. Then I needed something with a little more support and more rugged so I dont have to worry about anything swaying in the wind or moving, plus i drive really fast too.... the Yakima Highroller system is beefy and actually made for DH bikes.

this is the Merc Bike rack, to me it just didn't seem all that sturdy. at least not as sturdy as the Yak.

two of which are like clamps (outter two). the other two in the center are a snap on type pre-formed clamp. all attach to the rails that run across for the bikes.

Oh forgot to mention my new plates!!!!

Stormtroopin

could be worse.......right????

Those without a fairing, do you get much wind noise? I have experienced quite a howl on other cars without a fairing.
