PARKING PLUNGE
MERCEDES SUV IN THREE-STORY FALL
Talk about a wild ride!
A Mercedes SUV plunged three stories from a Greenwich Village garage yesterday afternoon, landing on a rooftop.
Miraculously, the hapless attendant who piloted the luxury vehicle managed to escape just moments before it plummeted.
Witnesses said he accidentally threw the 2009 Mercedes into reverse at the garage on University Place at East 12th Street just before 4 p.m., when the owner's wife and kids came to pick it up for jaunt to Brooklyn to visit their grandmother.
"I was on the phone and I heard this loud boom," said Colby Danz, an NYU instructor who was on the ninth floor of a building just behind the site of the crash.
"I hung up the phone and looked out the window," Danz said. "I heard the fire alarm go off."
The massive SUV catapulted through the sixth-floor window landing in a tangle on a roof between the two buildings.
"There's a f- - -ing car in my back yard," Frank Schwartz said. "I heard a guy yell earlier, but I thought it was just my crazy neighbors partying, and I just ignored it.
"That's what happens when you live in New York."
Witnesses said the attendant was wheeled out of the garage on a stretcher.
"When it happened, he told them he was dazed and confused," Danz said. "He looked unconscious and was in a neck and back brace."
The SUV owner, Eli Yedid, an entrepreneur who lives nearby, raced from his house around the block after he got a frantic phone call from his wife.
"She was on the main level, and she just heard this huge bang," the father of three said. "She just flipped out."
When he saw the wreckage, Yedid said he was only concerned about the victim, who was rushed to St. Vincent's Hospital for evaluation. He did not appear to be injured, according to officials.
"We'll have to get a new car, but it's people that aren't replaceable," said Yedid, who bought the shiny SUV three months ago because it was roomy enough to accommodate his growing family.
Yedid said he knows the attendant and called him a "happy-go-lucky, a jolly kind of guy."
"I'm elated he's alive and well. I hope to be able to laugh with him about it later on."

Wow, that's crazy.
How do these things happen? Does this garage have floor to ceiling windows? And how does one go from being in the car, foot on brake, accidently put it in reverse and then drive it out a window but have time to jump out at the last moment.
Just weird.
Sounds like a nice enough guy so I hate to even say it, but I wonder who he will sue?

This (and other more minor accidents) is exactly why I never pay a stranger to drive my car unless I just have to (like for service appts).
I wonder about the insurance coverage. Technically the car is insured (for collision), not the driver, so the owner may have to make a claim on her policy, even if the parking company pays the bill.
Uggh.
