DIY - HID Fog light installation without cutting OEM bulb holder(DDM tuning HID kit )

Here it is guys... I finally got around to sending my headlamps to Lightwerkz, a custom headlight projector retrofitter whose work is just top-notch. We have some really cool stuff that we are trying out, so stay tuned for that one! =)

While the headlights are out-of-commission, I decided to purchase DDM tuning’s slim-ballast, 5000K HID 35 watt kit w/error canceller and upgrade my fog lamps to HIDs.

Again, hope this serves as a guide to whomever wants to take on this project, I'll help with any way I can. There are many ways to skin a cat, this is my way…

Tools:
Torx screws
Socket wrench
Long nose pliers
Flast head screw driver
7/8 inch drill bit

Additional Materials:
3m double sided tape
22 Gauge Steel Galvanized Wire

(2 pieces) 1 ½” Qwik-Cap – you can purchase these at any home improvement store. I got mine at home depot, plumbing department

Steps:

1. You probably don’t need to take the bumper off, but for this install I just took mine off just to give me more room. You will need to take 6 bolts total and the bottom part of the bumper is clipped on to the under panel (just have to push down and out and out she goes). To get the bolts out near the fender, you will need to unclip the fender and get them from underneath.

2. Remove the fog light unit from the bumper, there will be 3 torx screws up front (this will remove the black plastic & chrome surround). There will also be torx screws in the back. Once you have it all out, you should see something like this.

3.Carefully, remove the HID bulb from the clear plastic shield and test fit in on the OEM fog light casing. I used the H7 spacer (comes with the DDM kit) and some 22 gauge galvanized wire to secure the bulb into the fog lamp.

I just wanted to note that some people went the route of modifying the OEM H7 bulb holder to secure the HID bulb in the housing which is fine and works great, but I didn’t want to drill and cut onto my stockers, hence I am doing it this way…

4. Drill a 7/8” hole on the Qwik-cap. This will be the new enclosure for the HID fogs.

5. Pinch half of the rubber grommet through the 7/8”, completing your HID fog light cover.

Fits like a glove…

6. Now time to put the fog light back into the bumper… A quick tip, if you can get the whole fog lamp assembly in the bumper whole, take the metal piece off, slide the fog lamp through the front of the bumper and screw in the metal face from the back-

7.This step seems a little goofy, but I found that the OEM fog light connector, didn’t fit perfectly with the DDM connector, I just used the DDM kit's spade connector and plugged it into the OEM bulb holder, which then plugs into the stock fog light connector. I wrapped everything up with electrical tape to keep them nice and dry.

8.Now the moment of truth, time to plug her into the car and see if she lights up.

9.Tuck everything away, I used 3m double side tape to mount the HID ballast on the bumper beam. I just zip tied whichever ones I can to clean up the rest of the install.

I’ll post some more night pictures once I get the headlights back from Lightwerkz. I hope this helps… Feel free to ping me if you need any help with your DDM fog light installation.

Renato

Also, there tech docs from DDM should help…

I think it would be nice if we can create a sub-section within w204... LIKE DIY section

or even further group stuff like the for sale section

You can use the holder, but you will need to cut into it to make the HID bulb fit- I didn't want to do this.

Check out this how-to from ddm tuning...

same looks as HID... um, maybe... but i would have to disagree with you on this one. halogen bulbs may "look" like HID but no where cold to light output and quality

hi. spoolIT85, there is this function of the foglamps - when you're going slow, the foglamps turn on/off progressively according to where you're turning the wheel. Can you tell me if this feature still works fine with the HIDs? (I'm asking because - for example, in the domestic area - you can't dim a neon light, which is also a gas discharge lamp). Thanks.

Do you have to remove the grill in order to remove the bumper?
