Yeah, I was in contact with him before decided to get UMI instead of command aps..
He quoted me $3,000 installed for the command aps, which is not the same as multimedia package..
What you will get is command system with hard-drive-based navigation, dvd playback & voice control..
However, you will not get harman/kardon logic 7 DSS system & 6-disk CD/MP3 changer..

Wether you get the DVD changer or not is just a matter of choice, the head unit with changer is somewhat more expensive, but the only difference between the two is the HU.

And the final price for all my parts including PCMCIA reader and map DVD was around $2000.
If you buy the parts from www.ebay.de you might end up at the same price.

I spent ~$1700 in parts as I got the HU (used but in A grade condition and working order) very cheap. I did have to go to the dealer to get the Axial blower fan installed along with MOST Ring reconfiguration and some SCN coding, and that set me back about $600. This would have been ~$110 if i had been able to get the Axial blower fan in myself - not enough patience

I could add the IPOD interface, but I am more interested in the front, rear, and side view camera that can be installed and controlled with the Comand HU with APS (NAV).

however, I looked at UMI and I was very wary of the fact that I have not seen anyone say they can update the maps on it. Has anyone been able to update the MAPs?

Map update with UMI is performed through the USB port with a USB memory stick.

Actually, I think what you do not get are the external amp, the speakers, and the IPOD/MM interface but you do get the 6 CD/DVD MP3 changer, that is contained within the Comand HU with (APS) NAV, as mine plays CDs with MP3 data and it is a 6 disk changer. I guess if I add the additional speakers, the external amp (used?), and the IPOD I/F ($600?), configure the Comand via the Engineering Menu, I would be there. Seems it would be fun to accomplish for me, but i can play my IPOD now and the sound in the car si very good as is, but if I happen catch a deal on the parts, I might do it and send the forum my results (pics).

depending on where you get the parts, you can do it under $4k even with the dealer installing the Axial blower fan and performing the MOST Configuration and limited SCN coding. You should be able to install a lot of the system yourself. There are threads in different forums about parts, installation Q&A, etc.

The only issue I have is to get a local service shop to configure the IC to display NAV data, as the dealer would not as MB said no. But I can get that done anyway.

But are you aware of any update being available at this stage? Comand Online did have a small update file but it cannot have been a real map database update, it was only a few tens of megabytes.

A bit strange as the first devices were sold quite some time ago. Either the currently available devices have quite an old map database or if later devices have a more recent database, then the older ones are lacking an update that should really be available.

This isn't critical yet but pretty soon first buyers are expecting updates. Other navi devices have updates more frequently.

On another forum, some of the posters were saying they contacted MBZ directly and still could not get an answer on how to perform a MAP update or the availability of a MAP update. Seems to me since MBZ and some dealers are pushing UMI pretty hard, that an update should be available. I spoke to MBZ NA about the UMI, and they told em that MBZ Germany is working on upgrading UMI to allow voice control, but they had no date when that would be ready. That would be a good feature to add, along with the NAV MAP updates.

Wait... there's a front and side view cams?? how come nobody has done these mods (assuming it's as easy to do as the rear-cam mod). I'd be all over this.

There is. It's called the Becker Map Pilot, you can get it from ebay for around $200. You need to install the wiring harness too, if yours did not come preinstalled. Not sure how much that is.

Look in your glove box first, check to see if there is the slot for the module. Mine didn't come with this and now I'm having a difficult time finding a way to get it.

4K for navigation install? lol no. Time to go buy a 120 dollar Garmin at Costco that has free map updates for life.
