Yes, the key is programmed to a given VIN when ordered, then it is impossible to reprogram it.
However, there seem to be a problem as this key isnt valid on 807-809 cars, MB will only program keys that are compatible with the specific cars coding.
I have talked to Germany and they will let me know tomorrow if my order went through.
But I am pretty confident that the current keys we are using will eventually be discontinued and replaced by the new style key, but this will take at least a year.

You might want to try swapping the interior parts (would only give two working keys instead of three) but the metal blade is different, it is not possible to take the metal key from the old and insert to the new one. The keys look very similar but clearly the print on the buttons isn't the only difference.

Nope, interiors are not interchangeable, on the new key the backside pops out revealing the battery compartment when a button inside the blade slot is pressed.

They said that they only program keys that are valid for my VIN and the 2010 key isnt (yet).
However the new key functions exactly the same as the old one, the only difference is the design, so it feels a bit crappy.

It appears that they still haven't decided to be Valet Friendly. That lack of a hook loop for the valet to use is a serious design flaw in the key.
As to the Panic button, I agree, it's a quick way to really find your car in a crowded lot full of similarly colored Benzs ...![Smilie](https://mbworld.org/forums/images/smilies/smile.gif)
I did use it one day when a particularly pesky kid was playing next to my car with his Matchbox car. As he "drove" it right up to my car I pressed the Panic button. The kid was down on all fours when the siren went off, and he went straight up like a cat. Scared the $#%@ out of him! Great fun that!
