New key, looks great [pic]
When I first looked at the W212 key I was amazed with how the buttons felt and how the key felt in my hand, it was much better than the "old style" key that we all have.
Today when I got to work, three new 204.s had arrived from Bremen and I needed to move them, I was gladly surprised that these cars were equipped with the new style keys
Snapped a quick and crappy pic, but as you can see the buttons are greatly improved and the sides and rear of the key are more "edgy" and not as round as the old one.
I ordered a new key right away

Personally, I like the looks of the "old" key better. It's more elegant and "smooth" looking. The new one looks sort of like a mixture of "elegant" and "chunky" (like someone accidentally cut out the buttons as an after-thought) and I really don't like it (although it'll probably match the new E-Class well... since that car has the same "look" as well).
However, as far as functionality, the new key may be a tad better. Sometimes when I put my "old" key into my pocket, other keys will put enough pressure on the buttons to activate it (most specifically the "lock" or "unlock" button). Perhaps with the "new" design, it's harder for accidental presses to happen. Also, it would probably be easier to feel which button is which without looking at it with the "new" design than the "old" design (ie: key is in your pocket).

Snapped some better pictures, hopefully my order will go through, HQ called me up and asked why I placed that order, the new key is only available for code 800 models (MY 2010)
He almost got mad at me for wanting that key, he said that I should order the one meant for my VIN and nothing else

Don't worry, if you wait until the "old" style key is discontinued, then you should have no problem ordering the "new" style key as a replacement. That's what happened when my friend needed a new key for his ~2002 MB. Apparently his key used to be the really old black "triangle-ish" plastic ones, and his replacement was a key like your "old" key (black with chrome siding).

The thing I dislike the most with my current key is that too much force is required to push the buttons and its hard to feel the buttons when not looking at the key.
Also think its a bit slippery to hold on to when not equipped with a keychain or similar.
The slightly more boxy look on the new key feels a lot better in the hand.

For me I preffer the smooth / elegant looking of the old one , But from pics using the new one seams easier.

I prefer the smooth over the cutout in terms of looks. You might have a point regarding required pressure to push the button, but since we can't do live side by side comparison, it's hard to judge that aspect.

I think the main reason for the new style key is fingernail damages, also known as "wife damage"
Women tend to use their fingernails to push the buttons causing cracks in the flexible thin plastic in the shell, we have had numerous keys replaced under warranty because of this.

US 2010 Models will also be receiving these keys. The difference with these new ones on the US version is that the Panic button will now be triangular where the previous chrome keys were round. If you would like to "upgrade" you will have to get the remote and blade as they also changed the blade on these keys.
