Question C300, Gas Gauge Problem!?!

Hey everybody! Did a quick search to see if anybody else has had this problem, but didn't find anything. Twice, I have ran out of gas in my wife's C300.

The first time, I knew I was low and was heading to the gas station but didn't make it. Still, the needle didn't seem to be all the way on empty but the picture of the "benz next to the gas pump" did show up and I ran out shortly there after!

As for the second time, I still had two hash marks before empty, and the car was reading 45 miles till empty. No low gas warning, no "benz next to the gas pump," NOTHING!!! Then it stopped while I was driving. I was able to coast it to RaceTrak and pumped there and the car fired right up.

Do ya'll think this is a gas gauge problem or something more serious!?! I told my wife to not let it get past half a tank now since I'm worried it might happen to her while she's out and about.

Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I will be making an appointment with the Dealership later, just wanted to get a heads up from ya'll first!

I've read of a few people running out when they let it get below 1/8 tank. I always try to refuel before 1/4 just to be safe.

I know... I know... Shouldn't let the gas get low but try explaining that to my wife! I never let the gas get lower than 1/4 in my ride but was wondering why it was reading falsely. Or what else it could be.

Well Im bad about getting gas so I pretty much always ride it to E (I know..I know). My car will actually go about about 15 miles after the little "benz next to gas pump" icon shows up. I've only run out of gas once..but it was enough. Haha

Well, that's my point/question? Why did I run out of gas two hash marks before E??? Like I said, it was reading almost 45-50 miles to empty and then it ran out without warning!

I'm not sure what would cause that..but it's certainly not normal.

One would assume gas gauge is a mature technology that is dependable. You should take it to dealer to check out.

Assume away. MB has had problems with fuel tank senders for years.

Go to the dealer.

its a faulty sensor. Twice my car ran out of gas with at least a quarter of a tank on the meter. i brought it to the dealer. they said it was a faulty level sensor and replaced the part. hasn't been a problem since and that was over a year ago. i've had that thing REAL, real low trying to find open gas stations late at night, so i can attest to it being fixed.
