It probably dissipated some of the crash energy away from the cars passengers.

Considering the "crush zone" on a smart there is still no intrusion into the passenger compartment. That is pretty good for the size of the car.

What about some huge american tank truck or SUV? Would our C do like the smart then ?

passenger compartment has almost no deformation after front crash, and B pillar is farthest to center of dirver seat after side crash.
