More Mercedes Benz Quality Info

Recent Department of Transportation data for complaints they received per 100,000 cars sold from 2001 to February 3, 2010 (reported in Newsweek)

VW: 235
Nissan: 154
Chrysler: 138
Ford: 122
GM: 99
Honda: 97
Hyundai: 96
Toyota: 65
BMW: 37
Mercedes-Benz: 26

So, to clarify this data, VW owners complained at an approximate 10 times higher rate than did MB owners. Different sales volumes are not relevant, as this rate is based on per 100,000 cars sold. This is not warranty nor repair data, but complaints to the DOT, and all sorts of variables may be involved (e.g. propensity to complain to the government, for example), but it is directionally more good news about MB.

I'd expect BMW's to be a lot higher....especially with all of the HPFP problems on the N54 Engine.....

This "data" doesn't have a damned thing to do with reliability. What it may reveal is how many times dealers refused to fix something for free and so the owner decided to complain to the DOT. Since their "data" starts with 2001, why does it not reveal the poor reliability of the early W203s and W211s? MB willingly spent thousands repeatedly fixing my 2001 C320 and a friend's 2003 E500 was the same.

It doesn't.

Calm yourself...the data is clearly labeled as complaint data and not reliability, and I described at least one source of bias. Your example points out another, including that MB may be willing to spend money to please customers to a greater extent than those with a higher number of complaints. That may also make for an attractive brand for some consumers.

Thank you for the post and answer, Sportstick. We have nicknamed our 204 the "appliance", because it just starts and goes and everything works just fine - well, except the rather crazy wipers Those I could do without.
