Do you think the new C class could go 500,000 miles?

I know and have seen plenty of MB with that high mileage. Just curious if you think MB is back with reliable cars. I know they took some 5 years to design this car.

Cars are no different then humans in a sense when it comes to making it to 100+ years old.
Any car can do it. There's a lot of factors that get played into it, how you take care of it, how you drive it, and most of all, a bit of luck.

Well, I am a little over 2% of the way there...I will let you know in about 45 more years...

Depends how it is driven, maintained & how much money is thrown at it. As a taxi which is never cold 24 hours a day it should do it easily.
An example of how machinery's life can be extended ,my old brown coal fired power stations service life was 30 years when commissioned in 1968. I heard the other day that Alcoa plan to run it for another 20 years!!. I would assume all the boiler tubes would now be renewed . The turbine/generator is a German made Seimens with a wonderful record of efficiency & reliability & has had all the bearings & blades replaced.

Anything can last any amount of time if one keeps replacing stuff that breaks. Hell, you could get a 1987 Hyundai Pony to do it with enough money. For all practical reasons, no it won't make it.

Agreed...Yes I'm sure it COULD make it...but the question would become is it financially worth all the maintenance/repairs/upgrades to keep it running that long

500K?
Maybe a 4-cylinder diesel taxi in Mumbai or Havana could do it.

If the miles could be accumulated in a short period of time as with highway driving, and with proper maintenance, I would say yes. But for the average car to accumulate 500k miles, I would say no. Too many factors would play into the 500k miles, including short distance driving, accidents, part failure, and even rust. I typically put 25k miles on a car in a year, so it would take me 20 years to accumulate the 500k miles needed.

stange question
I don't think a single sole on this board will be keeping their car even close to that mileage.

Lol yeah I personally don't trust them beyond the 50k mile warranty myself. Every Benz (or German car for that matter) I've had has started giving me little gremlins around the 40k mile mark. Nothing major, but resulting in me having to make a trip to the dealership to have it fixed. I know many posters on this board have a lot more miles than 50k, but I've seen the repair bills, I don't want anything to do with those kinds of numbers lol. Plus it they seem to take a big hit on trade in value after 50k miles.

I too am wondering the same thing. My lease ends at 36k miles. But I got such a good lease deal. I will only owe roughly $20k at lease end (paid mostly principle for lease). Not to mention the extra $700 tacked on at the end of the lease should I decide to not re-lease or buyout my vehicle or another MB that my dealer cleverly never told me about encourages me to keep it. I am not too concerned with the vehicle making it 500k as it would be a little crazy.
But my question is: Do you think this vehicle, if properly maintained, could make it to the 100k mark without any serious issues or repairs? Is this car going to be one of the "bulletproof models" like to w124 series? Or will it be like my old FORD mustangs that hit 70k and fall apart?

Well I guess that partly depends on what options you got. Things like leather wear down and electronics inevitably begin to malfunction no matter what it is. For example my dad's ML has had the visor light go out at about 40k, the suspension makes this weird grinding when turning which we're getting checked (probably due to the potholes and weather), and small electronic things begin to bug you.
That said though I consider electronics to be pretty minor anyway and not too related to overall reliability because I personally expect electronics to malfunction after a while and need maintenance. Just me though...
If you chose options which are not likely to require a lot of maintenance then i'm sure it could last at least past 250,000 miles. Not sure about 500,000 though...

I have a basic car with a manual transmission. I would think that would allow me to have a less problematic ownership experience. Since I only drive about 8,000 miles per year, there is really no way I would ever make 500,000miles...a good ten years problem free would be nice though!

Only option I really have is 4matic... So hopefully all I am looking for out of the vehicle is for it to last me relatively 2-3 years after I get it fully paid off (7 years), so about 10 years all together with regular maintenance and 12k miles per year. I don't care too much about lights in the interior going out, or replacing headlights/etc. More concerned with major repairs like tranny or engine rebuild...

I would think the engine would easily last 100k, I actually remember reading a post here somewhere, that a user already has over 100k on his 2008. What I've run into and what a previous poster hit on, is all the little gremlins that start to pop up around the 40k mile mark. Nothing that left me stranded on the side of the road, but each one required me to bring it in, have it looked at, have parts ordered, and then return to have it fixed.

And although we all want a few more HP, at least the engine is tried and true and shouldn't be much of a problem area.
