Oil level warning

According to the oil dipstick my oil level is at full, yet I get a warning on the dashboard telling me to check oil level at the next fill-up. What's up? Is my oil level sensor malfunctioning?

Sensors, again

No doubt. This has been an MB feature since they added oil level sensors.
If it repeats itself, drop by your dealer for an opinion. And I don't mean "they all do that", either.

There is a recalibration procedure they can do. BTDT.

Update: the warning in my case may have been the result of dealer overfilling the engine. I had about 8.5 qt of oil in there whereas the correct amount is 7.4 qt. Ever since I changed the oil and poured in the correct amount, no more warnings.

8.5 qt is the correct amount to add after an oil & filter change, according to the owner's manual.

Where are you getting the 7.4 number?

8.5 qt is the correct amount for C300/C350 RWD. 7.4 qt is the correct amount for C300/C350 4Matic. The 2010 owner's manual finally shows this distinction (see link below). Sadly, my 2008 owner's manual shows 8.5 qt for all C300 versions, and that's wrong. Dealers don't seem to realize it either.

Well, it seems that even though the oil is at the correct level, I still get the warning. Interestingly the warning only happens after extended hwy driving, like after 100 miles or so.

I will have to remember to point it out to the service adviser next time I see him.

The oil probably expands when it is hot, so that may set off your sensor? Wild guess since i'm no expert in the properties of oil

I had no idea that the 4Matic had almost a quart less oil. Owners should double check and make sure that their dealer doesn't mistaken their car for their RWD model and overfill. It could cause big problems if ignored.

Now it is becoming more and more annoying.. on a recent 200 mile trip (all hwy), the "check oil level" warning message came up 4 times. Time to schedule a service appt, I guess. I just hope the ECU stores a record of these messages somewhere or else I'm going to hear "sorry, we could not reproduce the symptoms" spiel.

This is very interesting. I recently purchased an '08 and decided to go to the dealer to check how much oil they put in and they told me 8.5. It was a CarMax, so I am going to try to go in soon present them this documentation and get them to resolve it free of charge.

Ended up having my oil level sensor replaced after all. Let's see if it solves the problem.
