Is the plug for the base mirror the same as the plug for the autodim and home link mirror. Basically, I don't want to buy the Homelink/autodim mirror and plug it in only to realize the pins are not powered in my base car.
Has anyone done this? I know it has been discussed in the past but my thread search didn't turn up anything.
BTW Vixen...don't steal my mirror from me before I have a chance to buy it...lol...actually they have about 10-15 on there now.
I have spoken to a couple of the dealers here in ATL and they are all pretty well like "uh, ummm, uh, duh, no probably won't work". Only one came up with a plausible reasoning that MB may be using distict wiring harnesses for each car's specific package. I am no automotive engineer, six sigma black belt or logistics specialist, but it would seem a he!! of a lot cheaper, simpler and straightforward to use one wiring harness and let the things you attach to it dictate what the car can do...I will keep my fingers crossed for you/us.

- Cost of giving away circuits which do not result in the offsetting option price revenue
- Unused "pig tails" become NVH issues unless additional cost/weight is added to restrain them.
- Unused connectors at the pig tail need to be sealed off to prevent intrusion contamination.
We in Product Planning/Marketing would often get requests from Engineering to bundle options to reduce wire harness complexity, as the display in the plant could wind up looking like octopus mating season. However, unless each circuit had a purpose, the policy was not to leave one simply "tied off" if at all possible. BTW, this was not MB....another car company.

I pried out the plastic surrounding the mirror stem with a credit card. Once that was loose, I pulled down on the mirror and it popped off.
Then I removed the console and as posted elsewhere the easy way is to insert a Credit card at the center of the back edge and the console will swing down.
Disconnect the 2 plugs and remove the mirror. Install by plugging in the new mirror plugs. I then installed the mirror. (had to do it twice as the first time I had the plastic trim hanging backwards and could not orient it correctly).
I then reinstalled the console and then finally reinserted the mirror trim.
Lights on the mirror work. I've programmed the homelink. I covered the front ambient light sensor with my hand and then shone a light in front of the mirror. It darkened. So, it all works. Yay!

I noticed that when in reverse it was dimming (its not supposed to dim in reverse or with the map lights on).
So I took it to the dealer. The set an option in the computer system called "Dimming Mirror Present".
That fixed everything. So the next time your in for service ask them to set this option for you.
Anyhow, the door opener and auto dim work great so anyone with a non "P Package" shouldn't be afraid to tackle this as a simple, cheap upgrade.

Just find one in "A" condition with the correct color. Depending on who listed it at the yard, it will say things like "three button", "homelink", etc but since you have to call them to buy it, just confirm everything when you are on the phone.
If you don't see any, just try again in a few days as the listings change constantly.
I should have posted a DIY as a few of the steps are a little touch and go the first time around.
Just slip a trim tool or plastic putty knife, etc up between the back end of the light cluster and the headliner to release the latch and swing the entire light/control assembly down. Once you swing the light cluster down (it has simple hinges on the front/windshield side) and get a look at everything, it is pretty straight forward.
Once I disconnected the two electric connectors, I just pulled the whole thing down and set it on the floorboard until I had the mirrors swapped out.
The actual mirror mounting has two pins that press out using a coill spring between them. Those pins engage the mount on the windshield. I had a hell of a time getting them to let go. I finally inserted a flat head screwdriver into an opening in the mirror side mount and inside the coiled spring to allow me to use it like a lever and release a little pressure on the pin on one side…hard to explain but you will know what I am talking about when you see it.
Good luck on the search and the install.

My '08 Came with auto dim and home link... however... I have always wanted the DIGITAL COMPASS that started with model year '09!
Are the mirrors you guys are adding coming with the digital compass and does it work properly once plugged in!?
Thanks in aDVANCE!

I followed the advice here and got a mirror from car-parts.com. I originally did not have auto dimming/homelink/compass. Now I have all three! It works. Just make sure when you order the parts the mirror has the compass.
