After an alignment, the shop would (should) test drive the car on a non-crowned (or as little crowned) road to see if it pulls one way or another. Maybe the location is a little distance away from the shop, and maybe they test drove it a few times to get the alignment right... but 30 miles sounds a bit excessive.

Unfortunately, this isn't uncommon at all.
Very important to write down and take a picture of your drop-off mileage, and have a confirmation from the Shop Owner that your car will not be driven over X amounts of mileage, and will be kept safe at the Shop.
Also, one thing I'm going to start doing, which will annoy Dealers, etc. Is request a walk-around of the car with an employee, and sign/agree to whatever "damage" might exist on the car. So when I pick it up, I can scan and make sure nothing happened to it while on their watch.
