Continental ExtremeContact DWS Tires

Does anyone have the Continental ExtremeContact DWS tires? I am interested in getting these because my C300 is ready for new tires. The rating on Tire Rack is high compared to other tires. The price is really good too. Let me know what you guys think.

If you were going to get new tires on the your stock 17's what would you get? I am not a huge fan of these Michelins I have and they are $$ to replace. Thanks

That is really good to hear. After reading many reviews and checking the ratings on tire rack I was surprised at the good price. Hopefully others will chime in and let me know their experiences with this tire.

STFF means SEARCH THE FINE FORUMS

there are several threads discussing the DWS, no need to wait for someone to chime in, just go find the answers.

Wow, I have read some very good stuff about the DWS's. No question about it, I am getting these!!

I am curious to know what people think if I only do the rears now. Thats what I need. I will switch the fronts over to the DSW's when they need replacement.

Just one thought....on tirerack.com, click on the individual column headings for the different attributes.....dry handling, steering, snow, ice, etc. Make sure the ones that are important to you are the ones the DWS excels in. It's a great tire, but it is best in the wet/snow stuff, while Michelin beats it for handling/steering response, so check the data carefully!

Whatever you do, do all 4 the same at the same time for handling and safety.

While I will only put Michelin tyres on my car the DWS has enjoyed a very favourable reception on the W203 forum from a few engineers that I trust like Johnand.

Their pricing is remarkable.

Wow, glad you started this thread as I've been waiting to get a set of the DWS and they were running $700 for a set, but are now down to $688 for my car! I think it's time to get them and I've read nothing but good reviews and had the Michelin Pilot Sport A/S on my last car and liked them, but want to try something different. I'm ready to order!

I have the Conti ExtremeContact tires (18") on my car and I couldn't be happier.
I was impressed with the overwhelming reviews and tests and also how reasonably priced it is (I got it on sale from Tire Rack).

The grip and handling is excellent, with great road feel without being harsh. It is a surprisingly extremely quiet tire.
One fault is that eventhough it is an all-season tire, I wouldn't suggest driving it on ice or snow -- not a concern for me as I have a dedicated winter tire/wheel set.

You wouldn't be disappointed.

my S55 did great in the record snow we had this winter (about 90"?). The DWS is GREAT in snow. It's no Blizzak, but it's not supposed to be.

Only studded tires will be even halfway decent on ice. Just stay off the ice unless you are playing hockey.

DWS

I've had the 17" DWSs since June and have almost 4K miles on them. So far, they are the best tires I've even owned. Dry handling is spectacular and they cut through standing water at speed like a knife.

I haven't run them through snow yet, but I suspect this winter in MD will give me an opportunity to try them out.

I don't believe you'll be disappointed!

Just put a set of DWS on a few weeks ago, very pleased with them so far. They feel very secure in the rain, and I want to say slightly quieter than the stock ProContacts I had (although this is purely subjective). Will see how they perform in the snow but so far, so great (especially considering the much lower price compared to the Michelins) !

Awesome, that's great to know!
I sold my winter set before I moved to Toronto.
I have 4matic so with the DWS I should have little problem this winter. I will wait to see if I really need a hardcore set of snow tires.
I always assume an excellent performance tire usually performs poorly in the snow.

Ok. This is a question I haven't seen come up yet. Load ratings ...

My 2008 C350 with factory 18" wheels (NOT Dealer installed) had the Conti SportContact 3's. Fronts were 225/40 ZR18 - 92Y - Extra Load & Rears 255/35 ZR18 - 94Y - Extra Load.

The Conti ExtremeContact DWS I am looking to put on the car are Front 225/40 ZR18 - 92Y - Extra Load & Rears 255/35 ZR18 - 90Y.

My concern are the rear tires being a lower weight rating (154 lbs less) and not the extra load listing.

90Y is rated for up to 168mph and just about 1320lbs per tire... The curb weight of a c350 is roughly 3600 pounds with 54% distributed to the front, and 46% to the rear. Since the curb weight includes rims and tires, not all this weight is supported by the 4 tires, but lets just assume for our purposes that with you and your regular luggage in your car, 3,600lbs of weight is supported by the 4 tires.

54% of that 3,600 is 1,944 lbs, meaning that each front tire only carries half that normally, or 972 pounds each. 46% (which the rears hold) of 3,600 is 1,656lbs, now each tire will only have to hold half that, or 828 lbs on average. So with your 90Y tires rated a 1,323 lb maximum, you still have 495 pounds left on each tire to hold on the rear, while the fronts only rated to have 1390lbs, and normally hold 972 pounds, you have only 418lbs per tire left.

In essence, you shouldn't be as worried about the rears as you are the fronts, our cars are not perfectly distributed to the front and rear, and hold slightly more weight in the front. Again, these are just estimates. Chances are that you carry around extra things in your car, and your tires on average hold a bit more weight than I estimated (probably closer to 4,000lbs). But you still have tons of extra weight you can carry and lug around.

Remember, the ratings are ratings, it is what the tire can support without running into problems. It can hold more weight than what it is rated for and still have no problems. And in the rare event that you do carry more than suggested or rated, it will only be for a short amount of time; so there is no serious cause for concern. Lastly, the extra load vs standard tires are that the extra load has a reinforced sidewall, so the tires will ride a bit harsher vs standard, but will not fall victim to blowouts or flats as easy, and will also take corners a bit better than standard tires. The standard tires on the other hand will give a softer ride feel but sacrifices stability during cornering.

Personally, I think that what your looking to put on the car is fine, if your worried, I am sure that they make your rears in the extra load version; that will give you some peace of mind. But you really don't have to stress over it, 154 pounds per tire, or 308lbs for the entire car isn't THAT drastic, just don't put a bunch of bags of concrete in the trunk, lol!

Hey guys, I wanted to follow up. I ended up buying a set of 4 ExtremeContact DWS tires. The final installed price came in at $677.00.
I like the tires. I do think that the Michelins look better. I am not gonna get to picky for looks because I could just buy a set of aftermarket wheels and tires to dress up the car. These are the stock 17's and I am overall happy with them.
